Intro - Hypothyroidism and short LP

Hi ladies. I've been a member of the Knot and subsequently the Bump for 7 years. I've had this particular forum bookmarked for about a month, but never introduced myself. DH and I have one DD (4). She was conceived the first time we tried. My, how things have changed! After her birth, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I didn't think it would affect my fertility. When we started TTC in December of last year, both my OB and endo said to call when we got the positive test. Well, after a few months, I decided to try ovulation testing. That's when I discovered my luteal phase is only 8 days long. Although its never been officially confirmed, we feel that the cause of this is my thyroid. Last month was my first time on Clomid (50mg). I also took Prometrium after ovulating. It didn't work. AF showed yesterday. it wasn't much of a surprise, but I took it very badly. Clomid did not affect my ovulation, but it did lengthen my cycle from 26 days to 31. Tomorrow I have my follow up with my OB. I'm trying to stay positive that this next round will bring us that BFP!

Re: Intro - Hypothyroidism and short LP

  • Hi and welcome! I'm sorry that you find yourself here but it's a really great support system and I'm sure you will find a lot of encouragement during your ttc time.

I had a short luteal phase, too. I only discovered that after about 7 months of trying when I finally bought a CBEFM. My cycles were perfectly timed at 28 days, except for two that went 32 days (which of course, I figured I was 4 days late and pregnant -- not so). Once I started using the monitor, I saw that I was ovulating as early as day 18 and as late as day 20, which meant I had a 10 day LP at best. My doctor told me that those 32 day cycles were my "normal" cycles.

Anyways, after months of Endometrin (progesterone) not working, we finally decided to go forward with a medicated IUI.

I don't know how old you are, but if you've been unsuccessful for a while, I'd recommend consulting with an RE to run a panel of tests to see if there's anything else affecting your fertility. An OB can really only do so much, but REs usually take a more monitored approach and can hopefully give you more answers. Clomid can be helpful, but if there are other underlying issues, Clomid may not be able to increase your chances of conceiving.

Also, in recent months, my ovulation has improved and normalized, and I fully believe it was because of the acupuncture treatments I've been receiving. The first time I ovulated on Day 14 (and got my peak on day 12), I was SO EXCITED that I took a picture of it and sent it to my husband.

In any case, I'm sorry for your troubles, but I hope you get your happy positive very soon!
