Worried about LO weight...

Hi Ladies,

I have an 11 week old who is currently 9lbs 13.5 oz. She was born at 6lbs 15oz then dropped at the hospital to 6lbs 9oz. Everytime I see her ped doc he doesn't seemed concerned but it worries me that she's so tiny. She's always on her curve so the dr said that's what counts. She has reflux and is on Zantac and it seems to help and we upped her dose to 1.5 from 1.0 because she gained weight (yay). Sometimes she only eats 3oz at a feeding (she's on alimentum) and sometimes 4 but it's hard to get her to eat that in one sitting. I just worry all the time that she's not gaining and i'm a bad mother. I went in for a weight check (that I scheduled not the dr) just because i was concerned and the other ped didn't seem worried either. Should I just let it go? Thanks guys I know this was long but i'm a FTM and I'm still trying to figure things out.

  • I know it's hard not to worry but if LO is following her growth curve that is great and what matters most. Your LO is just smaller.

  • Are both you and/or your husband on the smaller side? If you're like 5'2 and hubby is only 5'8 you're going to have a smaller baby than someone like myself who is 5'8 with a 6'7 hubby. As long as the doctors aren't worried you're fine. Think about it, they see dozens of babies a week and have seen it all. I'm not a medical professional but I think girls tend to stay more petite. I have a little boy and he started off the same size as his baby gfs but now at 11 weeks he's huge compared to them. Be thankful you're little girl is cute and petit because before you know it she's going to be a sassy toddler and you'll yearn for her baby days.
  • DD1 was 6lbs even at birth, only 9lbs at 2 months and 11lbs at 4 months. Now at almost 2 she is just about 23lbs, still very low on the weight charts. No one is worried at all - she has been thoroughly checked and we are all sure she is just a petite little girl. Someone has to be at the top of the charts, and someone has to be at the bottom. As long as your LO is following her growth curve, you don't need to worry. Enjoy having an itty bitty, she'll be easier on your arms and back to carry ;)

  • If the doctor is not concerned, I wouldn't worry. My DD was a tiny little thing. She didn't double her birth weight until she was nine months. She was EBF, but never took more than four ounces except for a six ounce nighttime bottle at ten months. She is now an almost 28 lb. sixteen month old.
  • I always try to follow the rule, if doc isn't concerned.. I try my best not to be.

  • thanks for the reassurance! :) I think i'll just try and relax about it...i was 6 lbs at birth and before pregnancy was 109 lbs at 5'4. my DH on the other hand is 6'4 but slim. We'll see if she gets his height ;)
