uterus growing up instead of out

This might be more of a BTDT question, but I'm just wondering how you're feeling about the shapes of your uteruses.

Maybe I'm just a big wimp, but I really feel like this time around my baby is up in my ribs AND pushing my pelvis, like a lot. My right ribs are actually constantly in pain now, even when the baby is not over there, because s/he has been over there so much recently jabbing them. Last time I got plenty of rib action this far along, but didn't have the pelvis pressure until the baby dropped, around 36 weeks, at which time the rib pain went away. This time I'm getting both at once.

Meanwhile, my bump doesn't actually look that big. I think I'm measuring normal (they don't always show me the measurements but I peek and they look exactly on track). I truly doubt I have a big baby in there. I swear that last time I was protruding more outwards by this time (even with a small baby). People keep thinking I'm not as far along as I am. I just wish I'd grow more out instead of more within my own body, because it's really uncomfortable!

Anyone else have any similar feelings? Or just want to vent about baby's movements these days?

  • I'm sorry you're feeling so uncomfortable. It is odd carrying differently than before, I was much wider with DS, this LO is all out in front which makes me look much bigger than I was in my first pregnancy. I don't find it more uncomfortable, but I am starting to get annoyed that everyone feels the need to inform me of how much larger I am this time around. Gee, thanks...

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say.  It is weird that we can carry differently the second time than the we did the first time.

  • I am a FTM so I am not carrying differently, but I feel exactly like this with my LO.  I really expected that my stomach would be sticking out more by now.

  • I feel like I'm carrying the same as I did with DS.  I'm pretty sure this one is all stretched out because he's down in my pelvis and up in my ribs at the same time.  My belly doesn't look that big, but I've been measuring right on track so I guess it's fine.

  • Oh I also should have clarified that I'm a medium-tall person (5'7"). I have so much respect for your short mammas, and/or those of you with short torsos. For me to be this uncomfortable carrying just ONE baby with FIVE weeks left to go, I don't know how you other women do it with more than one or with a smaller body to begin with! Maybe I'm just a major wimp!!!

  • I'm 5'3" with a short torso and I've been feeling how you described for a few weeks now. She's from my pelvis up to my ribs and when she stretches.... ugh.
