Barely saying words

My twins are 14 months old and they are barely saying any words. They say the following:

Bye
Momma
Dad Da
jaja  (dog)

They make a lot of noises that don't sound like words.  They are hitting all their other milestones just fine.  What was everyone else's twins doing at 14 months?

Thanks!
Samantha

  • That's totally normal at 14 months.

  • Please don't get all worried about this.  They are ONLY 14 months old. IF you are still concerned at 18 months, speak to your Pedi about a EI evaluation. I had my guys evaluated at 18 months- they didn't qualify- but at 2 J had a HUGE language explosion and N not so much.  N gets speech twice a week- he is also going to be evaluated next month since he turns 3 and then go from there.  As long as they are meeting other milestones- please don't worry.

  • My oldest only had a handful of words all the way up to 18mo - then she exploded with full sentences out of no where. She does stammer, now (has inconsistent pauses between and in the middle of words) at 11yrs old, but that didn't start until after she went into Kindergarten.

  • Mine are almost 15 months and aren't saying a lot.  Mama, yes and Dad, dog, duck, done and down which all sound exactly the same. Our pediatrician said it's nothing to worry about until around 18 months.

  • My boys are just starting to add lots of new words at 21 months....every kid is different....my nephew barely talked at all till 2.5...now at 6 he is the most articulate kid you've ever met..I wouldn't worry!
  • Mine are almost 17mo and don't say much. They say Mama and Dada but not always. They say Didi (dog) but not all the time either.. P says DIDT (I did it!) a lot. That's about it LOL.

My twins are also 14 months and not saying much.  "Mum, Dada and hat" (I think, from my girl).  I am trying not to worry about it but I will bring it up at their 15 month appt.  Their receptive language seems great tho.

  • My oldest had very few words until close to 20m when a whole slew of them came out of nowhere. His receptive language was always good, though, so I didn't get too worried.
