September 2012 Moms

Have we talked about this yet?

What are you getting LO for their birthday?  Or are you not getting them anything at all?

DH and I started talking about this last night.  I don't really know what to get her or if I want to get her anything until after her birthday....  We purchase toys as she needs them or we feel she is ready for them, we bought her a new bouncer recently because we discovered she liked a different kind at daycare than what we had at home.  We buy books when I find ones that I think she will like or likes when we are at the store.....  So I am just not really sure that there is anything that she needs or wants right now.  We are having a party with friends and family and then doing a pool party with most of the same friends and family that night, then she has her dedication and lunch the next day.  So, I just don't know.  Am I a mean mommy for not getting her anything for her birthday?

  • You aren't mean for not getting her anything!  She won't know or care. :)  We're getting DS an outfit, 1 pair PJ's, one toy, and one book.  We will most likely hold that pattern for every birthday of getting those items to keep us under control! If you really want to, you could wrap something she already has to open at her party. At Christmas time, we brought the same gift to every party for DS to open, and no one ever knew. :)

  • Since her bday party theme is Hello Kitty I got her a Hello Kitty track suit from Zulily.  That's it so far and I may get her a book or two and that's it.

  • Totally not a mean mommy!  We bought DS is Little Tikes pickup truck (like the cozy coupe), but we don't buy him things very often because we are on a really tight budget and we budgeted for that.  If we bought him things regularly I wouldn't have an issue with not getting him a present.

  • We got her a PBK knock off chair.  It's adorable.

I will admit to being the crazy mom that buys my kid a ton of stuff for her first birthday. And all subsequent birthdays. My parents didn't really do anything for us on our birthdays when I was growing up. I make a HUGE deal about birthdays. Lots of presents, giant parties and the birthday kid is the King or Queen of decision making that day. They pick what we have for breakfast, lunch and dinner, what they wear, what we watch on tv, etc.

My kids always give their siblings a gift on their birthday too. And I love how much time and effort they put into picking them out. I want my kids to look back on their birthdays and remember how much fun they were and special they felt. I also make them a photo book of their birthday celebration every year.
Wow, you are super mom!   ^:)^

I don't know what Sean will get yet. It won't be much because a) we have everything ever, b) we are low on money, and c) Christmas is right around the corner. We always buy a ton for Ethan for his birthday (his is in oct) and then Christmas comes around and we have nothing left to get. This year I'm going to be smart and limit the birthday gifts. I think he's going to get a keyboard that Target sells. It looks like a cat and has a microphone. DH will hate it because it's noisy, but oh well ;)

My mom calls this "something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read." I think we'll do this for Christmas time. For his birthday party, I don't think I'll have a gift for him. I will probably give him something on his actual birthday to make it a special day just me and him.

I'm interested in seeing what Sawyer picks out that day!

Damn, how did I not think about this. I guess we will take James to the store and let him pick out a toy for Leo.

Leo is getting a ride on Radio Flier vintage car. It was free with points from work and I'm using it as decor for his party. For James' first birthday, we got him an activity table for the playroom. Good for storage and gets used all the time. Very practical gift.

  • I'm one of those moms who isn't spending $600 on the 1st birthday and we won't be getting her anything big either. Probably a couple of books, maybe some outfits. I will try not to compare but between pintrest and TB I feel like a huge slacker mom.
  • Her birthday is a week from tomorrow and I have no.freaking.clue what we're getting her! We've been so busy getting the house ready for her party and planning her party that we really haven't discussed it! I guess I'll add that to the to-do list!

@marisakathleen where did you get it? I'm looking for a small, soft chair for DS, but I'm way too cheap for the PBK one!

  • @bettyandco I looked at birthday stuff on Pinterest once and immediately regretted it. Her party will be no Pinterest party but there will be plenty of pink and zebra plates and cups...courtesy of Hobby Lobby!

  • I ordered her a bear rocker from zulily last week. If I hadn't seen that, she wouldn't have gotten a specific gift. We buy clothes, gear, etc., as it's needed at this age, and it's not like she would know the difference. But I suppose it's good we have something for her since DS would know and might ask on her behalf, lol.

Me too. I am still unemployed so we have $0 to spend on her birthday. No party. No presents. I feel incredibly sad about it because of TB and Pinterest. I want to be super mom but just can't right now. I know she won't hate me for it later but it still sucks.
Aww, Dr. @mathlete I know it's easier said than done but you shouldn't feel bad.  My mom was a teenager when she had me and I have no idea what my first birthday was like nor do I care!  I remember an awesome one at 4, 5, and 13 for sure though.

I am with @jenndub, birthdays are a big deal around here.

  • Honestly, haven't gotten that far.  She has very few toys, so I'm tempted to pick up some new things.  At the same time, it's not like I need to make that birthday-specific.

I probably will get some sort of memento for her--like "This is the stuffed kitty you got for your first birthday"--but nothing major.

Can getting her new carseat count?  I mean, she'll be happy to shred wrapping paper on anything, so...

uglysofa.com.  Check on retailmenot for a coupon code too.  We got 20% off.  It's adorable.  I posted a pic of it on the FB page.  It was $35.99 and it's brown with white polka dots.  It says "Nancy James" in light pink and the PBK tag is still on the bottom.  They use different foam.  I figured for $35 if she hates it I haven't invested a lot in it.  I can't justify spending $109 on a PBK one.  It's just not worth it to me.

  • Probably just some small things- shoes for fall/winter & a baby doll, I think! (I feel bad that she doesn't really have any toys of her own since we have so many from DS already)

I bought her a big owl-shaped pillow today, with the intentions of saving it for her bday, but I gave it to her already. I suck at that!

We'll also put money into her savings account.

I bought W a red skootcase. So clearly a gift that amused me and is useless to her. I can't wait for my...I mean her gift!
