Vaseline for stretch marks?

My dermatologist (who also recently had a baby) hands-down recommended vaseline to prevent stretch marks. I just found out I am pregnant and want to start this regimen as soon as possible. I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this and what experience they had. I'm also wondering how they get the vaseline to dry on their skin. I know you are supposed to apply it while you are still wet, but how do you ever get dressed?!?!

Re: Vaseline for stretch marks?

  • Yeah... You can't prevent them at all w/any topical cream, oil or Vaseline. I'd get a new dermatologist. The one you've got is an idiot. Stretch marks are genetic.

  • I used Palmers cocoa butter with DS. I only got stretch marks on my boobs. I know you can't prevent them with cream, but I figured I at least had to try. I drank tons of water, incorporated coconut & olive oil into my diet, and ate well. There are many factors that play into your skins elasticity. Stretch marks don't run in my family, so I got lucky there. GL!
  • Thank you, but my doctor is neither an idiot nor unrealistic. She made it quite clear that there is no sure-fire prevention and that I may be predisposed, etc. She recommended the vaseline (and of course plenty of water) as the best defense. That is all.

Yeah...again, that's not what you said in your OP.

In case you forgot what you actually typed in the OP:

So my response that your doc was an idiot is based on the fact that you made it sound like a sure-fire thing. I tried EVERYTHING both times (I have a whole cabinet full of stretchmark stuff). None of it works. Save your money and save the vaseline for baby's butt when they are out of the oven.

  • I would be a little careful about Vaseline because petroleum based products don't actually soak into the skin (which is why it's not drying) although they might help keep in the moisture from your shower. They can also trap unwanted things between the skin and the Vaseline. I've heard natural cocoa butter is the best but you will want full-on thick body butter not just a moisturizer that contains it. My mom swears by it and has hardly any stretch marks. I have a few already from developing as a teenager so apparently it helped her overcome the supposed genetic predisposition.

  • Ick... I couldn't imagine putting Vaseline on my belly!!!! 21 weeks, showed quickly and got worried as I have a few marks from puberty. I have read everywhere that nothing stops stretch marks and was a bit taken back when my dr said to use cocoa butter. I got a new dr. (Not for that reason lol.. There were other factors involved) new dr said don't waste time or money on any creams or oils. BUT if you want to go the Vaseline route... I keep seeing a commercial for a new spray that Vaseline makes. Fast drying and whatnot. Maybe try that? I like the feel of oil on my skin after a shower, so I haven't stopped using what I've always used.
