Tailbone pain?

Just curious if anyone else is experiencing tailbone pain postpartum? I delivered 10 days ago and spent the first 6 days flat on my back with a spinal headache. Between the intense headache and the mega doses of pain killers in the hospital, I must not have noticed the tailbone pain. Now that I'm home and feeling better from the spinal headache, the tailbone pain is very intense when standing up and moving around is difficult. My previous two children were 4 & 5lbs, so this is my first experience delivering a 7lb baby. Did anyone experience similar pain? If so, how long did it last? Do you have any tips other than not laying on your back and using ice packs a few times a day?

Re: Tailbone pain?

  • I have had tailbone pain since my son was born 5 months ago. I use my nursing pillows under my butt instead of under my ds. I had a hard time getting my drs to do anything for the pain but I finally have an appt with the pain clinic next week. So far nothing else has been helping with the pain so I would advise you to start talking to your dr about it now.

FWIW, this is the first time I have had tailbone pain and this LO was 5lbs14oz and my first two were 5lbs15oz and 6lbs0oz and all three were 19 inches so size of the baby has little to do with it.

  • Yes!! It killed for weeks! I kind of thought it was in my head at first. I also sat on my boppy any time I wasn't using it to feed my son. I am one month pp and unless I do a ton of sitting (6hour car ride) it doesn't bother me any more.

  • I had a tailbone injury as a teenager, and my son was sunny side up. He was also 8 lbs 7 ounces, and bruised my tailbone during delivery. I had pain for about a month pp. it wasn't helping that I was spending most of my day nursing, sitting on it. I took the Motrin that was prescribed to me at discharge.

  • Thanks for everyone's replies! Today I tried taking a larger dose of Motrin that I was prescribed and that seems to help me move around the house although getting up and down is still painful. Hopefully we all heal soon!!
