Dance Class

Five Months to Plan

So we signed DD up for her first dance class. The local small studio has a class for kids as young as 2. It is supposed to be a child's first class without a parent. It is only 30 minutes once a week. She is prepared to teach understanding directions etc. She also was talking to me about the different ways they deal with the kids not wanting to leave mom and dad and go to class. In fact if they do not want to come to class more than 3 times she recommends waiting a year. We signed no contract so we pay by the month. We have to stay becaouse if she needs to use the potty we have to help her, but we do not watch the class (there is parent viewing times.) DH danced for years including competitive dance, and I have never taken a dance class so this is all new to me. This studio does not do competition dance, but it more low-key. I am excited for DD. We took her to registration last night and she looked around. She seems excited. We will see it starts 9-10. She has never been to daycare or preschool so we shall see. Anyone else starting a dance class or something like it soon?

No experience but how exciting and good luck!!
I'm looking forward to when A is 3 and he can do swim lessons with the instructor.
My sister and I did a tap/ballet/gymnastic class when we were really little (2 and 4) we must have done ok. I believe we were in the same class based on old recital tapes I have seen.

I know I was really surprised that they could start younger than 3. I am not sure if this will be a good thing, but DH and I really wanted her to have to listen to a teacher. We did not want to wait another year till when she starts preschool.  She is currently cared for by DH and soon to be grandparents. We have done parent/child: swimming, library story time, music classes, and some craft classes. This will totally be her first experience without a family member adult. We use family as baby sitters even (we are blessed that we can.) She seems to have an outgoing personality. We will see.

letranger    This teacher seems to have reasonable expectations. She has a young elementary child and baby of her own. We shall see.

Yay! I hope she has fun! Hazel's been dancing since last September. I think it does help a lot with learning good classroom behavior before preschool. I usually stay in the waiting room, but if I have to run an errand the assistants will take her to the potty. Don't worry if she cries when you drop her off sometimes, the trick is to just shove her in the room and run away as fast as possible lol. hazel would cry on occasion, but it was just an act. As soon as I left the room I could hear her laughing and she never wants to leave at the end. She did a couple sessions of dance camp over the summer and never cried when I dropped her off, so I think she's outgrown that phase, now she runs into the classroom and never looks back. I kinda miss when she would at least pretend that she was gonna miss me.

Sounds fun! I can't wait to get O into activities like this. He may not do dance, he's obsessed with balls, but as soon as we can do soccer or tball he's on the roster, lol

Good. I am glad to hear someone else started young. I think DH is going to take her since he used to be the dancer. DD separates from him easier too. I know I will take her sometimes too,but hopefully by then she loves it. She really wants to do it so we shall see.

We tried a summer program....she did great till it came time to listen.  We will try again next summer.

Our situation is a little different b/c C's been in DC already for so long, but he's actually been in a separate sports program at his DC since last year.  I was totally skeptical about it last year b/c he was so young but they let him do a trial class and he LOVED it!  So, I signed him up and he's done so well and learned so much.  They don't focus on a particular sport, just fundamentals, but he already knows the basics of kicking, dribbling, batting, throwing, and even things like hula hooping!

I haven't done any sort of class recently, but I'm planning to sign G up for a gymnastics class this winter, and when that is done, swimming. She likes to go go go, so while the zoo class last winter was good in theory (story time then a craft), it didn't work out so well in real life. She was climbing the walls and I felt like I had the worst-behaved child on the planet. But gymnastics-now that I think she will enjoy.

I'm envious! I wish our daycare did something like this. How cool.

Yay!  How fun!  I took ballet for 10 years - had the pointe shoes and everything!  I really miss it.  DH and I were just talking about finding some sort of gymnastics class for Nate.  I bet your DD will have a blast!

JoJoMama730, it's actually an outside company that comes in and does it. Similarly, they have Kinderdance/Kindertots (which I know is a franchise) come in and do tumbling/ballet/tap.  You should see if there are any services around you and present it to your DC!
