Naps - 1 or 2?

I think DD is entering the in-between zone right now, where sometimes she takes her second nap and sometimes she doesn't, but when she doesn't she's really tired and we have to put her to bed earlier.

How many of your LOs are still doing 2 and how many are doing 1 nap?

How did you make the transition?  Did you gradually lengthen the time before putting her down for the 1st nap, or did you just push it halfway through the day all in one swoop?

Re: Naps - 1 or 2?

  • DS is still taking two naps. He didn't move from three to two until almost a year so I am guessing he will stick with two a little while longer.

  • DD dropped down to 1 before her 1st birthday.  (I was surprised)  It's so nice having 2 kids on the same schedule now!
They eat lunch at 11:15-11:30 then naps, usually they sleep from about 12-2

I'm also in the transition zone. On a ideal day DD will nap between 10:00-11:00 and then between 3:00-4:00. Lately though she seems to be needing more awake time between naps so her morning nap gets pushed back to 11 and then her afternoon nap (if she takes one) gets pushed out until 4:00 or 4:30, which makes her normal bedtime of 7:30 impossible. But then again if she skips her afternoon nap she is too tired in the evening.

Ideally I would like to start pushing back her morning nap and try to elminate the afternoon nap, but with 3 caretakers (DH, MIL, and myself) it's hard to get everyone on the same page.

Just one ever since 13 months when LO transitioned rooms at DC. He goes down after lunch around 11:30 and they wake him at 2. At home he'll sleep until 3 sometimes. He might take a short 30 minute nap on the car ride home, but that's not consistent and he doesn't take a 5 pm nap on weekends.

We didn't really do a transition. He transferred rooms and he just adjusted right to it.
  • We are still at 2 naps a day - sometimes the morning nap is later if we are out or doing something, but she gets tired around 9:30 after getting up at 7 or 7:30, sleeps for 2 hours in the morning, then also 2 hours in the afternoon, like 3-5.  She gets a lot of sleep at night, too, so for now I'm just thinking she likes her sleep.
  • It's hit or miss some days.  Sometimes he will take a morning one but sometimes not.  He definitely takes an afternoon one.  Even if he doesn't nap in the morning he still needs the quiet/alone time.  He gets cranky and fussy so I lay him down.  Most of the time he doesn't fall asleep but just plays quietly in his crib.

We've been at one nap now for at least 5 months. She just dropped the second nap on her own. She'll get up about 8 take a nap around 12 or 1 and I don't let her sleep longer than 2-2:30 hours. I wake her up and then she'll go to bed at 9-9:30.
Some days she fights her nap but if she doesn't take one then she'll get super tired and cranky around 6. That late I can't let her take any kind of nap because then I would just be screwing myself for the night.

  • DD has been napping once a day for the last month. I really didn't do anything differently, but she started dropping her first nap and now only naps after lunch.

  • Usually around 8 or 8:30 - she can take a nap pretty late in the day and still go to bed at 8  She doesn't always get 4 hours of nap time a day, but she gets at least 3, today was 3 1/2.

Wow I'm jealous Lucas is up at six naps for maybe 2 hrs max either 1 in the morning and one in the afternoon or a two hour mid day (at most many days its more like 1 1/2 total) then to bed around 8/30-9. And he's go go go when he's awake!

  • Riley has been down to 1 nap since he was 9 months.  He made the transition himself.  As soon as he started fighting his afternoon nap I just started pushing his morning nap later and didn't make him lay down in the afternoon.  He did just fine with that.  I'm jealous of mom's still getting two 2 hour naps.  Riley's one nap is only two hours!  Not a lot of time to get things done!

Riley is going to be a big brother to a little sister due April 19th!!!!

  • DS has been down to 1 nap since about 10 months. He did it himself. His one nap is around 12:30 for about 1 hour. He wakes around 8am and goes to bed around 8pm.

  • We're at the in-between stage too. Often its a morning and an afternoon nap. We're still at the point though were 90% of the time when one is missed she becomes a whining screaming mess by supper time. Sometimes she's ok without 2, but it's not often.
