Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Nipple flow switch

Hi ladies,

Just wondering, for the FF moms...when do you switch to a medium flow nipple? or even a variable flow? DS isn't having any issues with the slow flow as of now, still eats just fine, but don't most slow's say 0-3 months?  He'll be 3 months next week, and I know all babies are different, but how can you tell when it's time to switch?

Thanks!

From my previous experience and talking to pediatricians they say don't go faster than a slow flow. It can cause colic and even more gas.

Actually, there is no "cause" of colic.

If your LO is doing doing fine with slow flow, continue this. If he starts acting frustrated or is taking a really long time finishing a bottle, consider the switch.

  • We are dealing with this too. Our LO does have any problems with the slow flow, but it takes her almost an hour sometimes to finish a bottle. If I can find the Playtex medium flow nipples at the store, then we are switching today.

Other signs to look for: collapsing the nipple when feeding (having to suck too hard/fast) and frustration at the bottle.

That being said, the month labeling on the nipples is a total construct of the bottle industry to sell more product, and pretty arbitrary. If it is working for you, then there is no need to change nipples.

  • If its working and he isnt frustrated theresno need to change. I kept DD and DS1 on slow flow the whole time they were on bottles bc DD nursed and I didnt want her to get used to the faster flow nipples and DS1 got EBM due to poor latch and I didnt want him getting used to them either.

This. I'd change when he seems like he needs a change.

  • My DS is 5wks and we use medium flow.  We switched bc he was sucking really hard and getting frustrated.  He was also collapsing the nipple.  If your baby is using slow flow without issue, then there is no need change.

  • I think we used slow flow until around 5 or 6 months with each of my girls. You don't need to go by the ages on packaging for stuff like nipples, sippy cups, etc - just go with what seems to work best for your child.

We knew it was time to switch when they were taking forever to finish a bottle, collapsing the nipple, or were fussing at the bottle more than usual. We tried switching a little too soon with DD1 (around 4 months, I think) and she choked on the medium flow, so we went back to slow for a few weeks and she switched just fine later. It really does depend on the baby.
