Hardwood floors and space to play

Have any of you invested in a nice big play mat? We have hardwood floors except in the bedrooms and I'd love to be able to let him play on the floor in the living room. What do you use? I was looking at a foam Skip Hop one but it seems pricy.

Re: Hardwood floors and space to play

  • We used this one for DS1...

and I got this one for DS2 because we moved and our needs were different.  I love it!

  • Loading the player...
  • Walmart sells cheap ones.
  • We just laid down some blankets on the living room floor and DS plays on them very happily.

  • We have rugs in our living room and hallways. So if we put DD either on those or just some blankets on the ground. She doesn't seem to mind much either way.

  • If you get the foam mat, DON'T GET ONE WITH CUTOUTS! It is totally the most annoying thing! Every time I have mop the floor, I move it and end up with 48 circles on the floor that all have to be color coordinated before they're pieced back together! I wish I could return it for a rug...
  • I just use 1or 2 blankets under ds. Once he gets mobile then I wont bother with the blankets.

To be honest, Im more worried about one of us dropping something and not finding it before LO gets it into his mouth than I am the hardness of the floor.

  • I got the Skip Hop Alphabet Zoo Playmat. It's cute and I like it. Putting down some blankets or a comforter would have the same effect as far as providing cushion.

We got something like this wood grain foam mat (only it is bigger) and have been really happy with it. My only complaint is that they are slippery so during the crawling stage she had a tough time keeping her knees under her and then when she started walking she would slip if she had regular socks on. Of course, hard wood floors are slippery too!

  • Agree -- I had the same one and love that it blends in with my floor and is pretty sturdy, but the slipperiness has been a little bit of a problem for my daughter when learning to crawl.
