STTN and Bowel Movements

My LO has been sleeping through the night for about 6 weeks. In the past week, she has developed diaper rash. I've realized she's started passing bowel movements during the night, and sitting in the diaper for hours. I tried changing her in the MOTN last night, but she woke up and then I had to struggle with getting her to back to sleep. She sleeps on her tummy and in a sleep sack, so the process of rolling her over and getting the sack open is pretty much going to wake her up.

For those ladies with LOs sleeping through the night, do you have the same problem with bowel movements? What do you do, do you let your LO sleep or do you do a MOTN changing? If so, does your LO wake up during the change?

Re: STTN and Bowel Movements

  • I never change diapers in the MOTN. He wears pampers baby dry but even as a newborn he never got any reaction. You could try slathering on some sort of barrier cream beforehand?
  • Loading the player...
  • I slather a thick thick layer of zinc on before bed. I use cloth during the day but was finding that using disposables at night were giving her a rash. Once I switched to cloth at night (and use a liner to protect the diaper from the zinc cream) our rash problems went away. I find the zinc stays on her bum better too than with the disposables.

Ps - I don't think she was reacting to the disposables as she has worn them without issues in the past so I think our rash issues were poop related.

  • Also, like adults, a rash on the bum can also mean food intolerance

I would not change diapers in the MoTN if you can help it. Like a pp said, use a really thick layer of diaper cream. We used to use triple paste bc I heard it was soooo great, but it sunk right into DS's skin and he got bad rashes. The only kid we use now is Burt's Bees... It's thick and stays in place, even through the night. Try some different creams and see what works for you! Also, try to give your baby some naked time during the day to air out that little bum!

How much naked time would you do? I'm scared of doing it!

We do nekkid tummy time after a bath. I lay a waterproof mattress cover over her activity mat. If your lo has a rash, the more time out of a diaper the better!

When DS had a bad rash, I tried to air him out at least twice a day, once after his morning bath and once in the afternoon. I always laid him on a couple of towels or our exercise mat that is waterproof. I put it on his tummy if he would tolerate it... otherwise, I had him on his back with a dry washcloth over his little weiner. We did have a couple instances of him peeing, but it was always onto a towel or whatever, so it wasn't a big deal.

  • Thanks so much ladies! This is really helpful. I was worried we'd have to wake LO up! The rash is definitely tied to nighttime BMs, when LO doesn't have them it goes away.I'll be sure to slather on the butt paste.
