Working Moms

long commute guilt

We are very lucky that my mom is able to watch our almost 1 year old DD (we pay her) and my mom lives in the town I work in, unfortunately we have a 45 min to 1 hour commute one way and I feel incredibly guilty having DD in the car for that long everyday. Dh and I have been trying for years to get new jobs to shorten the commute, but to no avail :( Anyone else in this position? We do toys and music in the car but sometimes she screams getting in. Any tips for the long ride??

Re: long commute guilt

  • I don't have great advice for the long commute, but I was in this position up until this year.  I had a 45 minute commute and it was awful.  I got a job 5 minutes from home... so keep trying to do that.  Could you move closer to where you work? I know that isn't always ideal, but a short commute may be worth it.

My son likes me to put one of his CDs in and sing it to him-- annoying after I've been working hard  all day, but it worked!  He is rear-facing and we have one of those mirrors so we can see each other.  I know some people say they aren't safe, but that helps too.

  • DD is in the car with us for about that time each morning. She is not a fan but she has toys and books. She usually just cat naps. What about moving closer to work and your mom?
  • We can't move closer because my husband works an hour in the opposite direction...we live almost in the middle between our jobs. We have thought about daycare but its really difficult thinking about giving up care from my mom who is great. We do listen to cds and sing which helps and have the mirror. I think special car toys might help...as long as she doesn't throw them! Thanks for the ideas :)

That would be great but my mom has to be home for my brother when he gets out of work. He has Down Syndrome and works until 2:00.

  • What about finding daycare once or twice a week and then using your mom the rest of the time? That way you could switch it up a little....I used to commute an hour each way and I would bring my daughter with me and drop her off at a daycare close to my job. I looked forward to our extra time in the car together, but she was a little older (3-4 at the time) so it was easier for her to handle the drive.
  • Yeah, I would keep trying to find something closer. Long commutes are a job deal-breaker for me (although I know not everyone is able to say that).
