Issue with circumcision at 20 months??

So we had our LO circumcised when he was born.

DH took him into the doctor to have her look at some spots on his leg that were persisting and she prescribed a cream. NBD. DS's little penis has seemed sensitive to DH lately, so DH asked the doctor to look and she said it looked like his stiches from his circumcision were making their way out. She said it's unusual but it can happen depending on the type of method used. She said to just put the same cream for his legs on his man bits to help with the inflammation and to let her know if it doesn't clear up.

I wasn't there for this appointment but this just sounds made up to me. Why at 20 months of age would this be happening?

Have you guys ever heard of this? I guess this is part of why LO has been freaking at diaper changes actually.

Re: Issue with circumcision at 20 months??

  • That sounds like way too long for there to be stitches still in the skin... I would imagine they would have dissolved already or have been removed. I'd get a second opinion. There are a lot of problems that can arise after a circumcision. It wouldn't hurt to get it checked out by someone else.

  • Yeah and quite honestly I haven't seen anything that would make me thing that there was a foreign object any place. So I don't really know why she would be correct. So we're going to apply the ointment and then maybe we need to see a specialist.

Or maybe wait and see if the redness clears up (b/c that's all I've noticed is some inflammation) and if not then go see a specialist.

  • Circumcisions shouldn't require stitches in the first place so that makes no sense.

  • I've never heard of circumcision requiring stitches. I would most definitely get a second opinion.

My LO is 20 months and I just recently lost a few stitches from my cesarean scar. I didn't freak though- it is normal. (Background I am an RN) It is completely normal for some internal (dissolvable) sutures not to dissolve. Like any foreign body (take a splinter for example), when left alone it will either encapsulate to protect the person's body or expel it. Having said that, circs don't usually require sutures unless there is an issue. I would use the cream and if it doesn't resolve soon, get a urologist to take a look.

  • Dissolvable stitches don't always dissolve properly or completely and can make their way out even years later. And they are very recognizable as stitches. They look and feel like crinkly bits of thick fishing line.
