Any humidifier experts here?

edited August 2013 in Babies: 3 - 6 Months
I accidentally left my humidifier on all Summer, plugged in and running with an empty tank. I think it was "supposed" to turn itself off when it ran out, but when I moved my hand over the spout, there was definitely a breeze. I only noticed it when I went to start using it today and realized it was still plugged in from the last time I ran it (likely end of last Winter). It sits in the corner of my room, so I hadn't noticed.

I lifted the tank out and the reservoir below was really gross... a bunch of yellow/brown. I think I cleaned it all, and the humidifier seems to be working okay, but I'm wondering if I should buy a new one anyway? They are only $50... perhaps there's some gunk in the machine itself that I missed and running it all Summer long did some damage?

In case it helps, here's the model:
amazon and reviews

So it's filter free and everything....

  • i'm surprised it still works! did you use a bleach solution to sanitize the tank and pieces? If so, i'm sure it's perfectly fine. if you haven't, make a 10% bleach solution, soak the non-motor pieces in the solution and i usually pour the solution in the bottom part where the tank fits in and let everything sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with a bunch of water. the bleach will keep any mold or yucky stuff from growing back right away.
