Success after IF

Fever after shots...

E had her one year vax last Friday. The pedi warned that one of them (MMR?) might cause a fever a week later.
Yesterday DC called and she had a 102 fever that dropped to 99 with Tylenol. Today it's around 100.
Did anyone experience this week later fever? How high and how long did it last?
If this is just due to her vax then NBD and we will baby her and Tylenol her and ride it out. But I don't want to ignore the fever if it could be a sign of something else. Does that make sense?

Re: Fever after shots...

  • I would probably watch her temp closely and see how she does in the next day or so. And maybe call the pedi to double check if they want to see her in this instance? Whatever feels right to you. You're Momma and you know best :) Grayson's pedi warned of the same thing for the MMR vaccine. His appointment was July 30th. He hasn't had any kind of reaction or fever, at least not yet.

  • If it's just the fever and E is acting normally then I would ride it out. If you notice that E is not quite herself then I would take her in. Either way you can always call your pedi office if you are concerned. Hope the fever goes away soon!

  • I was warned of fever and rash I week out from MMR, but we are not there yet. I was actually really surprised how not tired D was after his 3 shots at his 12 month appt. That said, if tylenol deals with it and you are comfortable waiting a few days, that makes sense. I find that if I insist on going to the pedi after several days of fever, they go looking for an infection and can do some uncomfortable and probably unnecessary procedures because of that (such as a catheter to check for UTI-- so not fun). So I tend to hold off.

  • @amandaleigh1 HI!  Happy (late) bday to D.  I was wondering if you were still around.  I see you every now and again on the CD board.  Hope all is well with you.  Thanks for the info.  I agree, I don't want them messing with her looking for an infection if it's just related to the vax.  But I also don't want to miss something because I think it's just related to the vax.  Seriously, where is the owners manual for these babies!?!?

@chiwifey Other than this fever a week later, she did really great with the 1 year appt!  She only cried for a minute after the shots, she came home and napped for two hours.  She was totally normal the rest of the day.

  • I have also heard that the delayed reaction to MMR is common.  We haven't done that one yet, so I don't have any direct experience.  Hope your LO feels better soon!

My SIL was an immunization nurse and said the MMR reaction is usually 7-10 days later. Both my kids broke out in a rash and had a fever about a week later.
Hmm, this was actually less than 7 days.  It was only 5 days.  And no rash.  It has been down to 99 today though with no tylenol, so hopefully it's just running its course.

Adalyn had a rash about 10 days after the MMR shot, and a fever about 6 days or so after the shot.  She was just fussier than normal, but eating and drinking fine, and Tylenol worked to bring the fever down.
