Can I find a specialist for my newborn without discussing it with her doctor?

My 2 week old has Unilateral Hydronephrosis. The found it when I was 28 weeks pregnant and it is still there now. We had everything planned out with her first doctor, he put her on an antibiotic just in case and we were going to go to Riley's Children Hospital 2-3 weeks after she was born to do a more in depth ultrasound to see what was going to happen. I had to switch her to a new doctor this week due to insurance and in a different state. I let her new doctor know everything that was going on and was supposed to happen. She said she'll look at her medical records and let me know. Also isn't going to renew her prescription. Like I said she was supposed to see a Urologist 2-3 weeks after she was born and she is almost 2 1/2 weeks old. Also I don't want her to stop taking the medicine because she could easily develop an infection. I do not know what to do here.

  • As long as your insurance doesn't require a referral, you should be OK to find a specialist on your own.

  • Can you call your old doctor for advice, and also see if they can call in a prescription for you while you figure it out?

  • I just looked it up and she would need a referral. I am going to call her old doctor today. I'm not sure if he would call in another prescription for her but I hope so. Her medicine runs out in 2 days.
  • Just curious why you waited til the very last minute to figure this out? 2 days really seems like its pushing it.
I don't see why your dr won't give you a referral.

In order to see a specialist you normally need a referral. Your pediatrician should give you a referral to the Urologist, but if not you need to then probably find a different pediatrician who CAN and will refer you to the specialist you need.
It wouldn't hurt to call and ask if they would refill her meds. If they won't do it over the phone, maybe you can take her in and get a new RX.
  • Her doctor's appt. was yesterday with her new doctor. I assumed since she was put on the antibiotics as a safety precaution, her new pediatrician would do the same since it's common to do so with newborns until they can find out exactly is going on. Right now I'm waiting for her old doctor to call me back.
