Marina nickname

We have chosen the name Marina for our second daughter and after a discussion with my parents the other night, I started thinking about people calling her Marnie or Mari (Maur-ee) for short.  Could you see that happening with Marina? If so, do you think it would be Marnie or Mari?  Not a deal breaker for us on the name, but I'm kind of hoping it does not happen that way.  Whatever happens, happens.  My mother adamantly did not want my two word first name to be shortened to the first word, but throughout my school years it happened anyway.  I'm pretty sure my first daughter will be Jill when she is in school and we use Jilly alot~ actually we call her Beans more than anything :)  Maybe we'll call this one Boats :)

I don't see a nn coming from Marina and I am jealous, my husband vetoed Marina both times for me.
I def. feel you, my husband hardcore vetoed the name I was IN LOVE with- Gwendolyn

  • I definitely don't see her getting called Marnie or Mauri unless you encourage it. I would be more inclined to shorten it to Ri, Ri-Ri, or Rina. I'm more inclined to include the strong syllable "Ri" than the weak "muh" syllable.
In fact, my name is a bit similar (Miranda) and I get called Randa and Manna. So I could even see her being called "Mina", like my "Manna"

  • I love Marina! And I always thought one of its advantages was having no "real" NNs. I can see someone shortening it to Rina, but never all the time (like Kate/Katie for Catherine.)

  • The Marina I know has never used a nickname.  She's always been "Marina"

  • My DD is Marina. She just turned two. I think Mari and Marnie are cute nns, but neither one comes naturally. Mari might be a cute one when she's a teenager, but doesn't fit right now. She's gotten Rina from a few of her toddler friends because its easy for them to say.

GREAT CHOICE BTW!! :)  Marina is classic and beautiful even without a obvious nn. :)
