High-Risk Pregnancy

High risk for Down syndrome & cysts on babies brain

When I was 16 weeks I got the normal blood work done. My doctor called me two weeks later and and asked me to come in that way so she could get a sonogram, I went in and she told me that the blood work showed that I was at high risk of having a baby with down syndrome(I'm 22 years old & no family history of Down syndrome or other chromosomal problems). She took measurements of the baby and referred me to a specialist. Four days later at the specialist they took a sonogram and said it looks normal as far as down syndrome but that there were cysts on the babies brain(which normally go away by 24 weeks) but if not it could be another condition known as trisomy 18. I am getting a blood test done called maternal 21 that is new and 99% accurate, it will teat for trisomy 13, 18 and 21(down syndrome) I'm just really worried about it, I'm so young and healthy I just don't know how or why I'm having these problems. Has anyone else went through this? I go back in a month for another sonogram and will get the test results in about a week
-found out at the specialist that I'm having a girl:) hoping that she's normal and healthy!

Re: High risk for Down syndrome & cysts on babies brain

  • I had bloodwork done (quad screening) at about 16 weeks and it came back high for down syndrome. I went to a specialist at MFM and also had the Materni21 test done.  The sonogram and the Matrni21 test showed that everything was fine with our DD.  We didn't have any of ther other issues you are talking about (tumors), but I do know how scary it is to wait.

I am a bit older than you, but also have no history of anything.  I hope that you get good results and that your LO is healthy!  Congrats on the baby girl!

  • One of the ladies on my local board had an u/s where it showed a cyst on the baby's brain. However, it was gone in the most recent sonogram, so yes, they can resolve. Your best indication is the Mat21 test that you did. Good luck and prayers for your daughter.

Thank you so much juleskeim, I guess it worried me the most because first it was Down syndrome and now it's a chance it could be trisomy 18. All I can do is wait for the test results and next ultrasound. I feel that everything will be ok though.
  • I got the Maternity 21 test results back and they were all normal! & it's for sure a girl!:)
  • Did anyone else have a negative result on the first test but still needed a sonogram to check the cyst? I just found out at my 20 week check up that my son has a cyst but my test results came out negative for downs.

  • My DD also had choroid plexus cysts seen on ultrasounds starting around 24 weeks and they all resolved by 28 weeks.  I was in for ultrasounds every two weeks due to other conditions so it is possible this is why they were picked up as I was told they are pretty common.  Regardless, my DD is a bright, spunky two-year old who is completely healthy!
  • I have had two babies with corid plexus cyst so far. My daughter had them and I was told that they would resolve by around 28 to 32 weeks and actually they never did. I always mentioned that she had these to any new provider that I saw and they actually chose to do the head ultrasound on her at one day old. The corid plexus cysts were still there but she's perfectly fine. She is now 13 months old and has zero issues. Now I am pregnant with number 2, and we found out the same thing at our anatomy scan. His cysts resolved 4 weeks later by the time we were at our follow up ultrasound.

I say all this so you know that the blood test you had is a much better indicator of your babies health than if the cysts go away or not. Hope that helps!
