My friend wants to have her 7.5yo evaluated for dyslexia. What type of doctor and so you have any recommendations on how to find a good one? She is in central NJ. Thanks n

Deardra (Dee) Rosenberg, LDT/C of the Newgrange School in Princeton did an evaluation similar to the one Auntie is describing that the Lewis School does. Either way, she'll have to have the school district either accept the out-of-district evaluation or do their own if she's looking for an IEP or in-school services. It took us six months to get an IEP, so she should start right away.
Newgrange has grown quite a bit, but it will never be as established as Lewis or Cambridge. I think they are offering scholarships to the school now, but either way, they will evaluate children who aren't enrolled and have no plan to. Unfortunately, it's still not covered by insurance.
I do agree that it would be better to have a doctor sign off on the evaluation. At the time, I was unaware that this was a possibility. I was told by our pediatrician that dyslexia is an educational term and not a medical one, and so I'd have to have an educational evaluation performed by a learning consultant. That's what led us to Newgrange. Are you saying that at Lewis the evaluation is performed by a physician?
