Shut It!

I have three neighbors who allow their animals to bark incessantly at all hours of the day. They have literally zero regard for others. We are knew here and everyone else tolerates it. I don't want to start off on the wrong foot but my poor kid can't get any quality sleep with this much barking. These are very modestly sized homes yet all these dogs are huge so their bark really resonates.

Do you think it would be mean to get a dog whistle or some sort of device to get them to shut up? If my dog barks, I bring her inside. Period. I would never allow her to be a nuisance. One of these turds even allows their dog to roam free and he wanders into people's yards, takes dumps, then wanders out. Grrr.

Re: Shut It!

  • If you want to do things passive aggressively, I think it'd be funnier to use a blow horn.  Every time the dogs start barking just lay on it!!

If you want to establish a neighbor-to-neighbor relationship with respect and boundaries and CONSIDERATION for others, I'd address it with the neighbors directly.  If they're so oblivious that they have no idea that their dog is a barker, then I'd volunteer to bring video on my phone next time I come over.  Chances are, they know.  Talk to them, if they're unwilling to be considerate, then you involve animal control.  Money talks...  ours implement $50 fines for these kinds of things.

  • I have spoken with some of the neighbors already. They've told me it falls on deaf ears so I don't feel like my voice, as the newbie, will make a difference. Two others have told me they just tolerate it because the people.don't even pretend to care by say, keeping them quiet for a day or so. I'm not afraid, and like you, I prefer to be direct. But I'm not gonna piss in the wind with people who have a record of not cooperating.

We live in a small town so there is no aminal control. One obnoxious neighbor lives next door to the sheriff and even he couldn't motivate the guy.

  • How is it not a noise violation? If we called the cops (non emergency line) they could potentially be fined.

  • Cootie I shoyld send you a link to our police department website. You will die laughing because it is a joke. They have a FAQ and in it they mention "neighborly disuputes" and it says something to the effect of, "We encourage people to work it out. Only call for emergencies." Barking is a nuisance to me but not an emergency.

Two people IRL have suggested the same so maybe you're on to something....

  • My sil's mil has a horrible dog! I mean it jumps on people, barks, scratches, and she never puts him outside. I am a total animal lover but even this dog I think is horrible. Well she got the bark off and now she can go over with out a problem.

But the dog whistle might.  Those things only dogs can hear, right?  Can't hurt to try it. And they could never prove you're doing it either lol
    My thoughts exactly.

That sucks.  I'm team blow horn.  Although if you're trying to keep your kid asleep, that won't help.  But the dog whistle might.  Those things only dogs can hear, right?  Can't hurt to try it. And they could never prove you're doing it either lol
@Kimbus22 Oh, pft, I don't even care if they see me doing it. If they question me, I will explain it is due to the incessant barking. I don't blame the dogs, I blame bad owners.
