Toddlers: 24 Months+

wants diaper off

I have been reading up on potty training now that ds is 2. I was thinking of waiting until he is 2.5 or closer to 3 since all the advice I have received or from what I have read has recommended this. He shows some readiness signs, but nothing consistent and definitely not always accurate. Like mommy "I pooped" when he didn't. In the past month he is getting more and more irritated with his diaper on and says, Dipe-e off. It's mainly when I have him just in a diaper without shorts, etc. I explain to him that he needs to wear it until he is ready to use the potty. So with all of this said, do you think he's closer to start training or is this something toddlers can do way ahead of time?

Re: wants diaper off

  • He may indeed be ready, but based on what you have posted I'm not seeing anything that would strongly indicate it.  You could always give a try and see.

I don't think the fact he wants his diaper off is much of an indication though.  I mean he probably also says he doesn't want to take a nap, but I doubt he's really ready to go without that, know what I mean?

Good analogy with the nap. I get that. I didnt want to try training yet bc of people me how hard it is to start early and than they can regress. He probably just dosent want this bulky thing on him, and I get that. Thanks for your advice.

  • I think if he doesn't want the diaper, you should run with it. I didn't potty train until 2.5 because I'm lazy. DS wasn't strongly showing any of those "signs" that you're supposed to watch for. It was so easy! I'm sure he would have gotten it sooner if we had tried sooner.

Worse case, he doesn't go for it and you put the diaper back on him for a few months

If I take his diaper off he dosent tell me if he has to use the potty. I did try before and he peed on his floor in his room. He never told me. I noticed. Maybe I could let him run around nude here and there and just keep reminding him to tell me if he has to use the potty.

  • FWIW, my ds didn't tell me either. we did timed increments. he's telling me now, but only consistently when we are out of the house.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!
