Frustrated with pumping

I am getting really frustrated pumping. I am breastfeeding most of the time and working on a freezer stash for when I go back to work. When she nurses she is always satisfied. When she eats from a bottle she eats about 4 ozs. She is 2 months old and weighs a little over 7 lbs. when she eats from a bottle and I pump I am only getting about an ounce. How can I pump more? My boobs are full but for some reason cannot pump it all out.

Re: Frustrated with pumping

  • What pump do you have?

Are you pumping to replace a feeding, or after LO has eaten?

Can you try pumping for 2 mins on the letdown setting, then 2 on the regular setting, and repeating that pattern a few times?

  • I have the dr browns simplese pump. I am pumping at both times. After she has eaten I can get half an ounce and to replace a feeding I only get an ounce.
I have not tried alternating the settings. I will try that. Thank you!
  • Some gals have trouble letting down for the pump. Try warm compresses and massaging the breasts. Also, having LO near can help.

  • Also, make sure you're lightly squeezing while you pump. You'll learn what helps get the milk out. Like I start to squeeze and massage once the milk stops flowing on its own. Then when it slows down again I massage again. You can do power pumps at night. My LC said watch a 1 hr show with commercials and pump during the show and rest during commercials. It's not comfortable but after a few days you'll see a supply increase and its easier to get out.
  • How long are you pumping? Aim for 20 or 25 min.

  • Do you have the correct size? A friend of mine had the same issue and it ended up being she was just using the wrong size shield.

  • Make sure you have the right size sheild, the standard size is too small for many women. Look at LO while pumping and try not to focus on what is or isnt coming out. Massage and compress your breasts and halfway through do another stimulation phase to elicit another let down.
