Finding out the gender

Hey everyone, hope you all had a fantastic weekend!, Just curious for a first child, how many found out the gender and how many didn't? My husband and i will be TTC in January and that's one of the interesting questions we are tied on, do we want to know, or do we want a surprise? Myself, i personally feel i need to know for planning wise, but a surprise would be really nice too, my husband is in between as well. My SIL and her husband waited till the very end for their first child and they said the waiting to find out was extremely tough. Any insight?

Re: Finding out the gender

  • We are not going to find out for our first.  My DH says that this will be the biggest surprise of our lives so why not wait.  For me, I don't want to find out because it will save me money on buying cute clothes and things every time I go to a store.

  • We found out. If you choose not to, make sure your entire team (OB, nurses, tech) know you don't want to know yet so they don't accidentally spill it to you. My boys made their gender pretty clear by flashing us during an u/s.

  • To each his own, but most of the people I know have all found out the sex, which is what we plan to do as well.  Kudos to those who can hold out though, I don't think I have that kind of patience knowing that I could know early, lol.
  • Gender = how is how you identify socially. Sex = your anatomical classification.

  • We found out the gender. If we have another child my DH wants to be team green and I want to have a gender revealing party. TTC is a long way away for us so we have time to see.

  • We found out both times.  I was way too impatient not to.

  • We found out the sex.  It was still a "surprise" finding out at 20 weeks.

That's funny, most of the people I know have chosen to wait until delivery.

I can see that it would be nice to know early, but I loved that moment in the delivery room, when I met her for the first time without expectation. I wish I could have that kind of moment a thousand more times in my life, but I'll take two more. :)

Whoever said it's still a surprise at 20 weeks is right. There's really no wrong way to go.
You know, that right there is what is making me want to wait, no expectations, its completely unknown. Although the waiting would be tough, it would be really amazing for the initial surprise at the end of if were blessed with a girl or a boy. Thank you!!!!

  • For our first, we desperately wanted to find out the sex, but the little booger wouldn't open his legs for us.  I had an inkling out little "it" was a boy, but DH thought it was a girl.  We had to wait until birth to find out for sure (even after 5 sonos).  We bought lots of green/yellow stuff, but we also bought a lot of blue because we figured if it was a girl, we could just add pink ribbons and such to it, but you can't really do that the other way around...

For #2, we found out with our sono at 18 wks or so - he was much easier to tell!

In the future, if we have another, I am sure we will want to know because it makes it so much easier for family/friends to shop and for us as parents to plan ahead. :) Best of luck!

  • We found out at week 20 that "surprise! It's a girl!"  After we found out the gender, I had people over to dinner and had baked cupcakes with pink frosting inside.  So for dessert, they found out we were having a girl!
  • We were Team Green both times.  We asked our MWs not to announce it, so both times DH was the one to announce, "It's a girl!" and then "It's a boy!"  It really was awesome not knowing and fun to hear everyone's predictions beforehand.  The only part that was really hard was when the u/s tech had us turn away.  Knowing that they knew was really hard, but once we left the office we were fine.
