Switching to 2% milk at 15 months?

Right now I give DD (15 months) whole milk and DS (almost 4) 2%. DD doesn't show a lot of interest in her milk and rarely finishes her cup at meals. When we were camping I just gave them both 2% to make life easier. I noticed that DD drank all of her milk at every meal. Today at lunch I gave her whole milk again and again she only had a few sips. At supper I gave 2% and she drank it all.

It may just be a coincidence but I'm thinking she may just prefer the 2%. I wanted to keep her on whole until she turns 2, but I'm thinking it'd be better to give her 2% and have her drink it all than only having a few sips of whole milk!

  • I would switch if she'll drink the 2% but not the whole. Whole milk has a really thick, gross texture and leaves like a film, so I can understand not liking it. I would just make sure she has adequate sources of healthy fats elsewhere in her diet.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. DS was a milk fiend and always just drank it all so not liking it didn't even cross my mind until this weekend! Lol. She does eat a lot of other dairy products and I'll have to monitor other fat intake to make sure it's enough.

  • Yeah I'd go with that. 2% is better than nothing I'd think. What about running it by your doctor to double check?
  • DD did the same thing at that age. Our pedi said switching to 2% was okay as long as she was getting healthy fat other places. She has always been a pretty good eater so I didn't worry too much about it.

  • I'd switch too.  At that age they were concerned about DD3's weight and we gave her avacado at lunch daily.  Maybe try that for fat - we also do salad with sunflower seeds which are a hit too.
  • Thanks for the suggestions ladies! I think I'll make the switch and see how it goes. She has a Dr appt coming up so ill see what she says then as well.

  • DD will only drink 2%.  That's all she's been drinking since 1 year.  I don't worry about it since she gets whole milk yogurt daily.
