XP: Daycare bottles

How do you all bring your BM to daycare?

I EP and right now, I use room temp BM that I just pumped for the subsequent feed.  The only bottle that we actually heat up is the one LO takes after STTN since that's a little to long to leave out at room temp.  The amount she eats really varies, sometimes only an ounce and then repeats an hour later, other times she takes in 4 ounces without a problem.

For daycare, should I bring multiple bottles with 4 ounces already in them or just containers with BM and 1-2 bottles? My concern is that since the milk will all be cold, she will have to warm it up and I can forsee a lot being potentially wasted...

If you EP you must have a pretty good idea of how much LO takes each feed. Send bottles with that amount and then maybe a couple small 1 to 2 oz bottles just in case if you are worried. My DC will not pour bottles, they have to be prepared ahead. I always send 1 extra bottle just in case. I just label the extra bottle to be given first the following day so the milk is used oldest first.

  • Yeah, our daycare wouldn't pour either. If your LO typically takes 4 oz I'd send 4 oz bottles plus a little extra.  Our daycare often tapped into the extra milk but DD typically ate more there than at home.  Then I would just use whatever was left over in the evening plus some that I'd pumped that day if necessary.

  • It's just hard because the volume she eats is so variable throughout the day! I guess it'll take some experimentation!
  • Check with DCP about rules and preferences but most people find that 4 bottles with 4oz each is a good starting point for a standard work day. I would try that for a few days and adjust from there.
  • You can reoffer milk that has been warmed. Or even milk that has been drank out of....we always just reoffer the next feeding.

I'd send 3 or 4 ounce bottles (whatever she usually takes) and give daycare a frozen bag or two with 2 ounces in it just in case you don't send enough.  And tell them to never throw milk out; if they don't feel like they can reoffer it, they can at least send it home and you can feed it that evening.
