Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Shellfish

Hi ladies!

Just curious if anyone has given their little one shellfish (we eat  a lot of prawns at our place).  We've given LO peanut butter, eggs, berries, all the other "allergenic" foods with no problem but for some reason I'm nervous about introducing shellfish.  Thanks!

Re: Shellfish

  • Funny - because I was the exact opposite!  I was terrified of peanut butter (no idea why) but gave my son shrimp at 6 months!  I don't think I really thought about allergens all that much except for the dreaded pb allergy.

  • We haven't because my mom and grandpa both have a problem (me and DH don't). Plus, we don't eat a ton of it anyway -- our pedi said we need to wait til closer to 2 so we probably will soon-ish. She hasn't had a problem with any other foods.

  • We did shellfish by accident at about a year old. We had wanted to hold off since DH's family has a history of allergy, but DH gave DD what he thought was a vegetarian spring roll. It had shrimp, but she was fine and has had shrimp and other shellfish since.

  • Yes, we have and DS has a severe sesame allergy.

When he met with his pediatric allergist at 13m, she said that a shellfish allergy is actually quite rare in toddlers and often time develops in adulthood.

  • DD loves shrimp. She had it around 12 months for the first time.
  • LO started shellfish at 9 months with her pedi's approval to add more protein into the diet. At our check up we got the okay for no restrictions. Day care on the other has sent home a few of her shellfish meals out of fear of cross contamination until they don't steal/swap food. It is at least a weekly if not biweekly staple in our house.
  • I haven't made a point of giving DS shellfish at home, but I know he's had calamari and I think shrimp too.  We have no food allergies in either family other than DH's weird but mild kiwi intolerance, so I don't worry about potentially allergenic foods that much.
