Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Feedings

I've got a few questions about feeding time....

1. DD eats baby food mixed with oatmeal twice a day. I feed it to her until she wants no more. But each time she's done she has to eat a bottle too. anyone else go through this?

2. When DD eats her food she is constantly putting her hands in her mouth, with the food in it. I know she's exploring but it seems she gets more on her than she leaves in her mouth. I've tried giving her a spoon or my other hand to distract her but no luck. Any suggestions?

Re: Feedings

  • With regards to #1, have you tried giving the bottle first then waiting perhaps 30-45 minutes before offering food/oatmeal?

  • Have you tried just giving her a pouch? DD is 8 mos, started taking the spoon out of my hand and the bottle out of DH's hand at about 6 mos, and now just wants to do it all herself. She's been pretty much refusing the spoon for the last week, and I saw her eyeing up the pouch at dinner so I just handed it to her and boom, problem solved. I just squeezed a smallish amount to the top and kind of held the bottom so she had most of the control, but there wasn't any way she could squeeze the entire thing all over herself.

Of course, I just bought a bunch of jars of food, so I'm looking at buying some of those reusable pouches to put them in for her. We also started giving her puffs the other day to give some variety at mealtime.

And yes, she also nurses around the time she eats. I always do it a little while before or wait til after so she definitely gets some food, but we're still working up to bigger amounts of food. It's nice at dinner time because she eats her little dinner meal with us, then nurses after, so she's nice and full when I put her down to sleep.
  • 1) This is a good thing, solids should not be replacing BM/Formula at this age.

    2) They say, "Before one food is for fun", so don't worry about what's getting in just so she's enjoying herself and learning about new tastes and textures.  DD did this as well when she would get a new food, I think it was just part of the way she experienced it.
  • Definitely bottle first!

We feed our girl solids twice a day as well, and usually try to time it about an hour after her bottle so she has room in her stomach but isn't too hungry.  She really likes to 'help' by holding the spoon as well... which is hilariously messy.  Just go with it and have fun.
