Anybody have SPD while pregnant?

I went to the OB last week and talked to her about some serious pain I've been having.  She knew about it from my last appointment, but it's gotten increasingly worse, and with clicking sounds, and I needed her to know about it.  They did all the testing for a UTI and bladder infection, all negative, and so she said it is Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction - aka the cartilage in my pelvic bone is relaxing too much and it's stretching out. On top of that, Baby A is head down and shoved into my pelvic bone putting pressure on it.  She referred me to an physical therapist - whom I will see on Tuesday.

My question: what else, if anything helped your pain?  My pain has become increasingly worse to the point where I can't walk, sit or lay down without being in some pretty major pain.  Also, I can't lift my left leg off the floor more than an inch w/out it hurting and my right leg is not much better. Usually sleeping helps, but last night it was so uncomfortable to even sleep...I've had no relief in almost 48 hours and I'm starting to lose my mind with the pain.

Thoughts? Suggestions? AnythingI can do to help the pain would be amazing!

Re: Anybody have SPD while pregnant?

  • I have the exact same thing only I now have 3 fractures in my pelvic bone on top of it. It is so so painful no matter what. laying down, standing up, sitting it all hurts. My baby A is also head down and down touching my cervix so that really dosent help much. What works for me to somewhat help with pain is icy hot patches, heating pads, epsom salt baths, and just breathing through the movements of trying to get up or down, walking basically anything i do haha! Im to the point of tears and my husband feels so bad but I dont think he will really understand how painful it truly is. sorry i cant be more help but just know your not the only one who can hardly move without feeling like your bone is being torn in half!

  • I had this beginning at 22 weeks. I went the PT and wore a special support belt and was able to get through the rest of my pregnancy. I highly recommend seeing a PT who specializes in womens issues.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • Thanks ladies! I can't wait for the PT on Tuesday.  I have a support belt from Motherhood - but it seems to cause more problems than not.  The PT I'm seeing specializes in pregnancy issues.  Fingers crossed!!

@mellissalynay90 - did your SPD cause the fractures?! I'm going to try some of your suggestions today in the meantime!

  • I think I may have this too, I've been having increasing pain over the past 10 days but no clicking. I plan on discussing with my Dr at my Tuesday appointment. I was hoping to work for another 4 weeks or so but I'm afraid it won't be possible. I sit at a desk but just a trip to the restroom can bring me to tears.

Hope you all find some comfort.

  • I had this too, and it was miserable. I am sorry you have to go through it. Good thing is my pain was instantly gone after delivery!
I saw that the support belt did not help you, but that seemed to give me relief sometime. Maybe have your PT help you position it? Also taking a bath helped and floating in a pool took the pressure off and gave some relief for a little while. Good luck!

  • @Brookith - what type of belt did you get? I'm wondering if I just have the wrong kind/one?  Also - I went swimming yesterday, well, more of floating, and it seemed to be great while I was in the pool - but the rest of the night I was in so much more pain than normal.  I'm not sure if it was the pool or not that did it.  I was going to wait to go again until after my PT appt...did you notice any extra pain when you got out?

  • Yeah unfortunately it was the cause. They are hair line fractures but because of my pelvis becoming so unstable and weak the pressure just caused it. Very painful but counter pressure does help. My husband will grab my hips and press and hold together for quite some time if I'm in a lot of pain it does help. It also causes my back to lock right up which really doesn't help anything at all. I'm like you I can get my foot maybe an inch off the floor if I'm lucky. But really my nightly routine is bath with Epsom salts ( I like lavender scented very relaxing) once out place a large heating pad on my back and crotch it's a long size so it wraps around between my legs and up my spine and drink a hot cup of tea while I wait for that to work once that's done my husband will do counter pressure and light massage and apply the icy hot patch before I fal asleep it helps some. I try to take it easy but with a three year old its hard and I like to clean so I'm doing things I really shouldn't but I try to let my husband help with stuff and my three year old will also help me pick up things off the floor etc. I'm just worried about if it will have an effect on delivery since I can hardly move my hips now how bad will it be in 20 weeks should we do a vaginal delivery :/ let me know how PT works

  • I had the standard one from Motherhood Maternity. I think the brand is Loving Comfort. If I am remembering correctly I would lay down on my back to put it on. It seemed to get into the right place better. I don't remember feeling worse after swimming. Maybe give it another try. Good luck! Hope you get some relief!
