I don't post much anymore but I hope you awesome ladies will still help me out.
I'm worried about DD's speech and plan to have her evaluated by ECI soon, as long as my pediatrician agrees that she likely is a little delayed. I think I may be getting a little ahead of myself as I haven't spoken with the pedi yet but I have a feeling he will agree. So, my question to you all is what is "normal" to you and how much is your LO talking? And, if any of you ladies have taken your LO's to speech therapy has it helped?
Re: Speech
L loves to babble. Follows directions well. Does have his words he says but does not full on talk yet.
Sometimes when I see others post about how many words or what they are saying it worries me but I have to stop and think every child is different. I am not against checking with your pedi for their input. HTH :big hugs:
Within those two months he kind of had is own word explosion without help. We still accepted services and started with SLP. Honestly, I think he's talking more because of his own development but the therapy can't hurt. He has over 50 words at least and is putting two words together.
He loves playing with his SLP and she does give us good tips to help expand his vocab. We get free services for a year too!
We'll be talking to her pedi at the end of the month. I'm curious about what she will say. She is a great communicator, she is just very creative in how she chooses to do so. I think that she can talk, just chooses not a lot of the time. I'm not too worried. But in your case, if you are, no reason not to look into an evaluation.
Still babbles A lot.
One big thing to keep in mind is that you are better off getting her evaluated now if you think there is a problem. Under the age of three, the therapy is NOT through the school which makes it easier to get. Once they turn 3, the help comes through the school system and there is often a long wait list. I say it doesn't hurt to have her evaluated.
I have been worried about Chase too. The daycare says he picks up on things faster than the other kids in his class but he talks way less than they do. He follows directions really well and understands but doesn't talk much. He just learned to say his own name this weekend but he can barely put the s on it. He knows about 15 words and can say the sounds of 6 animals. He recognizes stuff well too but definitely can't say as much as I think he can. I planned on asking the doctor at his 2 year check up.
In our case, it looks like our son may have verbal apraxia as well as some other sensory and oral/motor issues. I'm glad we ignored our pediatrician's advice to "wait and see" where he was at 2 years and got him support as early as we did.
