Are you done with bottles?

My ped has wanted them on sippy or straw cups since 9 months. I give them an 8 oz bottle of milk before bed and one for breakfast. They turned one in July. In between is all water from the LOLLACUP, a sip cup with weighted straw. I refuse to give up bed bottle but should I really give the milk in the morning in the cup too? Am I doing a real disservice?

Re: Are you done with bottles?

  • Honestly, I'm not in a rush to toss the bottle. We do use sippy cups (we use both the Boon and mOmma zippy) during feedings as well. He has a bottle before bedtime and it just gets him in the right zone to doze off.  I have older kids who all went past the "12 mos" recommendation. They turned out fine.

  • I keep trying sippies a few times a day, but she just won't take them.  we're still doing bottles more often than not.

  • DS will only take formula or WCM in a bottle. He has a meltdown if I offer it in a sippy. Water he is perfectly fine to drink from a sippy.
  • DD gets a bottle at bed time.  She still gets formula, but four times a day in a straw cup.I still have 16 days before she turns 1.  I don't know if we will get rid of it at one.  DD2 we went cold turkey at about 14 months.  That is when I will worry a little more.
  • We have been bottle free since 11 months. They wouldn't hold their bottle, just like DD as a baby, so I started giving everything in sippies and they do just fine. We dropped the bedtime bottle a while ago and now they get a bottle with their supper which is usually about an hour or so before bed. Their sippies don't have straws though, I feel like those are a little harder to use. HTH!

  • DS has a meltdown now if I try to give him anything in any kind of sippy or straw cup. He's over a year now, and it's something we're trying to tackle, but I really don't see any type of complete switchover happening soon. This refusal seems to be getting worse, as we've been using sippys for water since we started BLW 6 months ago.

We're trying only doing water in bottles for the moment and WCM (which he loves) in sippys, but so far it means that he's only drinking water. I read somewhere that the strong bottle preference might have to do with teething, so maybe once he's not in the throes of major teething, things will change a bit. The screaming when he even sees a sippy or straw cup isn't the most fun thing I've ever experienced.

  • DS gets a bottle of half formula half WCM in the am and the rest of the day he gets WCM in a straw sippy. I was worried about using regular sippy cups because of their connection with Speeh delays. plus he never really figured out regular sippy cups but does really well with the straw. We cut out bedtime bottle around 11 month because he stopped wanting it.

  • As of last weekend we're off the bottle.  Sippy's with water and milk.  We're using the boon and playtex sippys.  Micah didn't have any problem transitioning.

  • Mine are on organic milk now and I love doing the bottle before bed, it's a special time holding them. I will try to do the milk in the sippy cup at the breakfast feed. They are supposed to have 16 oz a day, so I'm doing 8 at breakfast and 8 before bed. Thanks for all the responses.
  • We do sippy cups all the time now. I think we made the switch 2-3 weeks ago. He is still on breastmilk at this point, I am trying to use up my frozen stash.

  • DS is still getting BM at daycare in bottles. he loves to drink water out of a straw cup, but he will only drink BM out of a bottle and refuses it if it's in a straw cup. we haven't really pushed the issue since our daycare provider hasn't mentioned it, but i am going to ask about it at our 12 month appt.
  • DD still isn't great with the sippy so we will still be on bottles for a while longer.

  • We are done with them.  She will be 12m at the end of the month.  I'm so thankful to be dunzo - so much easier to wash the sippy!

  • DD has been on sippy cups for about a week. I still nurse in the morning and at night, but when I do drop the night nursing I'll use a bottle.
