Running with a stroller

Does anyone do this? How is your kid in the stroller?

I want to do the Disney princess half-marathon in February so I've been trying to train for it. DD does well for the first 15 - 20 minutes but then she starts getting grouchy and will start crying. I tried hiding some toys under the jogging stroller and I give her one when she starts getting grouchy to distract her for a little bit. The last few times we've gone out, I've had to stop running and carry her back because she will just scream if she's in the stroller.

Do you think she's just too young to sit that long? She sits in it other places, the mall, the Celtic festival, etc. I run on a bike trail. It's an asphalt trail going through the woods with no motor vehicles or anything.

DH isn't home to watch her enough for me to get in all the running I really need to do so I hope someone has a magic trick of some kind. TIA.

Re: Running with a stroller

  • I think it would be hard at 6 mo.  I run with a stroller, but DD is 3.  She is also old enough to rationalize, bribe, talk through it, etc.

I started running with DD about that age, but never very far.  MHO is to go during nap time.  I would run with DD2 & DD3 and have them both fall asleep.

Also, if you have a friend with a stroller, it makes a difference to my DD to run with someone too.

  • I thought she might just be too young. Sucks because I was really hoping to get in shape.

I don't know any SAHMs who are runners. Nap time is a really good idea, though. I'd be afraid she would fall asleep in the car but there's a park next to the entrance to the trail so I'll try putting her in the swings and tiring her out before I start, lol. She's a pretty good sleeper so maybe she will stay down.

Thanks! It's funny that you bribe her. And I thought running was a lot of work pre-baby.
  • Could she be fussy bc she's not old enough yet to be totally comfortable? I used to own a bob and I think the brochure recommended not running until the child was 8mo, for head control reasons. It could be too rough of a ride for her right now.

  • I don't know, the path is paved so it's not really any bumpier than if I were walking. Maybe, though. I'll try laying it back and see if that helps.
  • I had a baby trend that I used a few times just for walking. My kid hated it. Hated is probably an understatement. He spent at least 5 or 10 minutes crying whenever he was in it. I got a city mini gt and have been using it for jogging and not one peep. He has never ever fussed in it. Apparently the city mini is comfortable for him. We usually go out for a jog and swing back home to pick up the dog for a walk. He spends over an hour in the stroller and is totally fine.
