Colic. And swaddle blanket question.

Ladies, does anyone else here have (or had, for BTDT moms) a baby with colic? Poor Judah seems to have so much trouble, particularly in the evening. I can just see the pain on his face from gas and tummy troubles and he also just has the worst time calming down and sleeping at night. I nurse him for comfort and that only seems to work while he's actively nursing. He'll fall asleep nursing and reawaken screaming within 5-10 minutes. I've tried gripe water. I've tried having him sleep in his RnP and in bed with me. I've also done swaddling and that seems to be the only thing that helps even a little when paired with nursing him to sleep. But that doesn't work all the time either. Does anyone else have experience with this? Any tips to offer that worked for your baby?

Also, the only swaddle blanket I currently have is one of the hospital swaddle blankets. I tried a swaddleme that I borrowed from a friend and DS got his arms out of it quite easily compared to the hospital one. So can anyone recommend their favorite brand of swaddling blanket that's good for fidgety babies?

Re: Colic. And swaddle blanket question.

  • I like the miracle blanket and the woombie. I also started a bedtime routine. We will keep his nursery dark, turn on white noise, then feed him. He usually sleeps from 10-2 then 3-5:30 or 6ish. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing. I think the swaddle really helps to calm him. I tried jammies and they don't work as well.

  • We are experiencing colic for the first time with DD2. We are using colic calm and it seems to help. Gripe water, mylocin drops, and special formula didn't work for us. I decreased the amount of dairy in my diet too since im breastfeeding and have heard a lot about babys having alergies to milk protein. We just got some meds from the doc too but they have a lot of side effects. If this doesn't work then I might ask for acid reflux meds. I am definitely still using colic calm. She will only sleep in her lamb chair (elevated chair), carseat or my husbands chest.

No advice on colic, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry for all the obstacles you and Judah have had to overcome, it can't be easy to see your baby cry so much. You sound like such a strong mom, he's really lucky to have you.

I have a swaddle me swaddler, but I think it's a bit too small and DS hates being that smooshed. But the aden and anis swaddle isn't as tight but keeps him feeling secure and he likes that. I hope you find something that works for you!

This is the swaddle approach we did with DD1.  She didn't really break out until 5m, but we needed to quit the swaddle by then anyway.

ETA:  Whoa, putting a link to a YouTube video embeds it right in the post.  Coolio.

  • I love the A&A blankets also. One of my favorite baby products now with both our kiddos. Are you familiar with the 5 S's? YouTube it if you're not or get the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD. This'd techniques really work when done properly. They have been lifesavers for us!

  • We use A&A and SwaddleMes. I read an article a while back that was on a study linking colic and migraines. Here is a similar article. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/16/colic-in-babies_n_3095198.html. The one I read suggested a dark room with little stimulation to help with colic, similar to what you'd do when you have a migraine. I'm not sure how good the study is, but I'd have tried anything with DS1.m

  • I second luvmyducks' recommendation from the youtube video.  She recommended that to me when Phillip was breaking out of everything.  We used A&A blankets for that.

Also, someone posted this video the other day and at first I thought it was crazy.  Then I tried it with DS when he had gas the other day.  It works like a charm! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xESfgrGIfPk

  • I love the aden + anais swaddle blankets, too.  I do have some of the Velcro swaddlers, but I haven't used them yet.  If you want them, you can have them (seriously.)  PM me if you do.
