re-entering the workforce

hello moms!

When my maternity leave ended, we decided that I should stay home to care for DS.  Now that DS is almost 2, DH and I have been discussing my re-entering the workplace.

A little background on me (sorry to relay my whole life story here)... I have a BSc in pharmaceutical technology then worked as assistant quality assurance personnel in a pharmaceutical manufacturing company for about 2 years.  Then we got married and initially planned to stay in DH's country of residence, so I quit that QA job and relocated.  I got pregnant soon after our marriage but unfortunately had a miscarriage.  This really took a toll on me, so we decided for my emotional well being to come back to Canada.  I came back, and was having a really hard time, but I knew I needed income fast so I worked part time (about 30-35 hours a week) in a grocery store until we got DH's immigration papers sorted out. Somehow, I got stuck working there and couldn't find a job in my field of study.  Fast forward, DH finally came here and I got pregnant soon after his move, so after my maternity leave ended, I work during the weekends at the grocery store.

I really really REALLY want to find a job that is in my field of study or any office job for that matter.  I don't even know how to re-write my resume to make it sound more appealing to employers... and that's where I need your help/opinion/suggestions.

Anyone who had a similar experience? Any tips?  I would really appreciate any help you guys can give.

Re: re-entering the workforce

  • Have you tried asking the Working Moms board? They might have more experience that could help you. Good luck!

  • I have not been in the same situation, but I would think it would mostly be addressed in the cover letter. You could also put a summary statement at the top of your resume that you are seeking to return to your field. I use to see purpose statements at the top of resumes quite a bit, then they kind of went away, but I am seeing them again on the resumes we have been reviewing for a job we are hiring in my department.

    Good luck!
