Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

18 mo. climbed out of crib

My 18 mo. just climbed out of his crib. He didn't feel like taking his afternoon nap, so he met me at the door. No injuries, thank goodness. I guess this means we need to switch his crib to a day bed. I was really hoping he could stay in his crib for at least another six mos!

  • I commiserate. DD will be 18 months next week and I've caught her trying to climb out. She is very close to making it over the side. Part of me thinks for safety reasons it's time to convert her crib to a toddler bed (hers came with the conversion kit). But part of me thinks 18 months is awfully early to be in a big kid bed.

  • Just the other day I read that someone took the bottom off their crib and put the mattress on the floor with the crib around it. It probably adds another 5-6 inches. Maybe you could try that.

  • If you don't want to move out of a crib yet, put your LO in a Halo Sleepsack.  They have big sizes and the kids feet being covered makes it really really hard to get out of the crib in it.

  • My son did a 180 out of crib when he was around 18 months old.  We had to watch him more, especially if he was standing up in his crib.  But if he was sleeping, then he was okay.  But we actually did not transition him to a toddler bed until he was 2 years old.  And it was cold turkey where his little sister got the crib, and he got the toddler bed.

We put ds in a sleep sack at 11 month because he was very close o getting all the way over. Then at 13 months we had to move him to a mattress on the floor because he could climb out of the crib. We don't have a dress in his room just a recliner and toy box. We shut the door while he is in there. Last week we put the mattress on a frame and it is going great!

  • It's been about a little over a week now that my almost 20 month old son has been in his toddler bed. He loves it. He was SO excited because we were co-sleeping but getting kicked in the neck at 2am was not becoming a favorite past time of mine. So, over the weekend, I stayed upstairs (I live with parents and sleep in the basement) and slept on the couch just in case. We have a gate that separates the living room from the hallway that goes to the bedrooms and the only time he climbs out is when he wakes up. Then he goes and wakes up my mom or sings in the morning over the monitor so I can come upstairs...then sometimes he's sound asleep and I can actually get ready for work in the morning! Let me tell you, those are the days I wear makeup hahaha. :-)
  • I'm so nervous about this happening.  Mainly bc we have hardwood floors throughout the rooms.  There is a small rug under her crib, but I really don't think it would provide a lot of cushion if she happens to fall! We are on the lowest level for the crib and I use a sleep sack at night and I know that's deterring her from swinging her leg up!  I like one of the other posters advice of maybe removing the bottom of the crib.

  • We moved DS into a toddler bed at 18 months. It was a God send. He never tried to crawl out, but he was sleeping terribly. After a rough day (one) of putting him back in when he fussed at the door, he has slept amazingly for two months. He went from multiple wakeups a night to STTN and 45 minute naps to 2-2.5 hour naps just with that change. Don't dread it! It's easy to do it early, too, before they can figure out how to open doors- then you don't have that additional challenge :)
