Re: Purchasing baby items

  • This is asked a lot, and answers are all over the map. We bought stuff before we were matched. There were several people on here and elsewhere who had quick matches. They felt flat-footed trying to buy stuff with a newborn to care for, and wished they had prepared better.

We ended up buying a crib, stroller, car seat, and PnP while we were waiting. We also started buying cloth diapers and clothes here and there. It gave us the opportunity to find things on sale and just add to our pile as we wanted. We still didn't have important things, like a crib mattress, when DD got here. And she was an emergency placement (already born when we were matched) so we had about 18 hours between The Call and bringing her home. DH ended up leaving me with her the first night home so he could clean out WalMart, LOL.

It's really based on comfort level though. Some people don't want a lot of stuff sitting around in case something goes wrong or if their wait is too long. Some people feel fine with heading to the store for a major shopping spree when baby already gets here.

  • We have everything and aren't matched yet.  We had two huge showers after we were approved.  I'm an over-preparer.  :)

  • We have a lot- but we bought it over the past 3 years ourselves throughout various pregnancies and now waiting for a match. Family may through us a small Welcome Baby type thing but I'm just two type A personality.. I had to be prepared (in fact we're over prepared).

It all depends on your comfort level.

We haven't bought anything but have a ton of hand-me-downs, including p-n-p and crib that were given to us yesterday, swing, and some clothes.  We have a wish list on Amazon that the moment we need to go to a hospital we can have delivered over-night to where ever we might be with a baby.  After our failed match we had to return a bunch of stuff and we don't want to go through that again, but with the hand me downs we have enough stuff for anything thrown our way and of course the "last minute" wal-mart/target/babiesrus run for diapers formula etc. will certainly be necessary.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm in the fence about what I want to do for sure. We have the basics as I never got rid if things after my son. However there are a lot of things that I would love to have for the first few weeks and I'm obviously cautiously excited as well.
