Climbing out of Crib? Help!

Hi Ladies,
Is anyone's LO able to climb out of their crib yet? DS was able to climb out today and I have no idea how. I am afraid for him to sleep in it now. He seems too young to convert to a toddler bed though. Is anyone in this boat, or have suggestions?

Re: Climbing out of Crib? Help!

  • He's made it as far as straddling the rail. He now wears a sleep sack whenever he's in his crib and that prevents him from swinging his leg high enough to climb over the rail.
This.  They make sleep sacks with little feet too, so they can still stand, but it creates a webbing on their legs, so they can't really climb.  Also, they make crib tents, which prevent being able to climb out.

We moved my DS to a twin bed at 2.  It worked out really well, but I don't think we would have wanted to move him any earlier than that.  I can't imagine transitioning out of a crib at this age, so I would try one of the other options.

  • L climbed out once but that was due to me not realizing I hadn't dropped the crib all the way...I heard him land and immediately start crying. He hasn't attempted it sense and he did it in a sleepsack. You could try turning the crib around if your crib has a higher back part and facing that out.  I think they also make crib tents, but I probably wouldn't use one of those.

How did you go about the transition, and how do you keep LO in the bed? I think we are close, but I'm afraid of'the switch!
  • My pedi said that when he starts climbing out of the crib to surround the floor around his crib with pillows to break his fall and fully baby proof the room. She said even after he becomes good at climbing out that the crib is the safest place for him. He hasn't figured out how to climb out yet so we haven't applied her advice yet but that's probably what we'll do.

  • When I was a nanny, the baby I took care of started getting out of his crib. His parents baught this tent thing that goes over the top. It worked very well for a while. If your not ready for a bed, it could be an option.

  • @bearsbearsbears - I understand what you are saying but that link is for one type of recalled crib tent.  I don't know if other types/brands of crib tents are still out there, but the ones you reference aren't.

I think they fall into the same category as bumpers.  If you know the risks and accept them and it works for you go for it.  But it isn't for everyone.  Personally, I think they look stupid and like a PITA to set up.  I would go for something else, I just don't know what.

OP - I dont have any suggestions that weren't said (turn the crib around).  Also, double check that your crib is at the lowest setting.

  • So I just looked for crib tents and I didn't find any but there are some that are mosquito nets/darkening tents.

WTF?  Is a mosquito net really necessary for a crib?  Aren't most cribs indoors?

What am I missing here?  I get it for a PNP if you put it in the yard, but a crib?

  • Lol....
I have been using a sleep sack for the past few days and it seems to be doing the trick. Will do that for a bit while looking for the next option (probably toddler bed...)
  • How the heck is that safe?  I'm pretty sure dismantling the crib is not a good option.  @bellaboo0706 - if the sleep sac stops working, try just doing a floor bed.  Baby proof the entire room and put the mattress on the floor.  A couple others on this board have done this and it worked really well.

  • I don't know about every crib out there but if I put my mattress on the floor, there would be a gap of a couple inches that Allison could get stuck in.  No thank you!  I would just do a floor bed at that point.

And to tag someone just put the @ before the screen name.  Then, if you are tagged in a post you will get a message in the upper right corner that someone tagged you.  @Starbuck128 - see if that worked for you.
