Anyone else having a small 1st birthday party?

We live in SD and all our family lives in IL so having a big party is out of the question. Both my parents and my in laws are coming out, but at different times (they prefer it that way so as to not have to share LO!) which is fine, but part of me wants to have a big party, but I know this will be easier as I don't have to worry about finding a venue or decorating, but part of me wants to make this a big deal. Anyone else having a small gathering? Are you still decorating and going all out? I don't think anyone will except us to, but I'm just curious as to what others are doing.

What do you consider small? My parents are the only family we have here. My brother and his family might fly in that weekend. Other than that, it will be our neighbors and a few friends. I am decorating the backyard and we will do an activity with the kids.

  • I consider about a handful small. I come from a large family so I'm used to having 20 plus people at a gathering, so this is new for me.

  • small party. parents and siblings. maybe a friend. totally decorating. Nothing crazy though. And we'll be getting a mini keg. Not for the baby.

  • We only do family for birthdays. Total about 20-25 people with grandparents, aunts/uncles, and cousins. I'll do a little decorating.  Guess I need to figure out a theme soon!

  • Small party here. My mom, sister (and her family) and that's it. Cake & presents. No decor. I did buy a cute shirt (as per tradition) but it won't arrive till after her birthday.

  • When my daughter turned 1, my husband and I brought her to the zoo for the day. It was perfect.  So now we've decided that it's our "family tradition" ....to have a quiet, immediate family-only zoo outing for the first birthday, and that's what we'll be doing for our son.

(Every birthday since the 1st though has been a big party with all her "little buddies" from daycare, though, so I guess it's just the first one that we keep low-key!)

  • We are just having MIL, FIL, my mom, and possibly great grandma. A few of our neighbors will probably drop in for cake.

  • We don't have any family here but we plan to have a get together with our closest friends..probably about 4 other couples and some little ones. I'm still trying to figure out what her cake will be..I think I plan to make it, but she's too young to like any "characters" so I guess I'll just have to come up with something.

  • We will have 10-12 people so, pretty small. Mostly adults, one toddler and possibly one baby.
  • When our DD turned 1 we all ended up going on vacation together as a family, about 12 of us, so we celebrated there and then when we returned a few more family members came over for cake and pizza. We are hoping to do the same for our DS 1st birthday in September.
