Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How often does your BF baby eat?

My LO is almost 7 months and still eats every 3 hours, all night too. She used to STTN but had a regression a month ago and is now getting up every 3 hours around the clock. Just wondering if maybe I should push her to go longer, especially at night? She also eats solids 2x a day.

  • I weaned DS off his night feedings when he was 5 months old.  He's been STTN since, except for times when he was sick and I'd nurse him once (at most twice) a night.

During the day, he nurses 6x:
    wake up (6:30a)
    before first nap (10a)
    after first nap (12n)
    before second nap (3p)
    after second nap (5p)
    bedtime (7:30p)

He gets 3 solid meals a day.

  • Every 3 hours during the day. At 6 months she was still waking up to eat twice a night but I started sending DH in to comfort her when she woke up and it worked (I dropped one at a time by sending him in) so I knew then that she didn't NEED those night feedings. Now at 8.5 months, she sleeps from 7pm to anywhere from 4:30 to 5:30, wakes up to eat and sleeps until around 7am. She also eats when she wakes up so from 5:30 to 7:30 would be two hours but I think she is just more so attached to eating when she wakes up rather than really being hungry.

I wouldn't deny my LO when she is hungry but I think a lot of times they wake up at night to eat (after around 6 months) purely out of habit. I'm a full-time working mom so if she doesn't actually need to eat then I'm not going to be up all night. If she ever cried for more than two "comfort sessions" with my husband then I would feed her because I wanted to be careful to not ignore a growth spurt.

You could try comforting instead of feeding for a couple of nights and see where it gets you. Chances are that your LO doesn't actually NEED those middle of the night feedings.

  • DS eats 6x a day: when he wakes up, before and after each nap (2 naps) and before bed. He's STTN. He doesn't eat any solids.

  • DD eats every 2-3 hours during the day... Sometimes at shorter intervals, especially in the late afternoon/early evening. She STTN 7pm til at least 6am. She started STTN after her 6 month growth spurt, and then had a few days right when she turned 7 months (and figured out how to crawl) where she was up 1-2 times at night. I only feed her at night if it's been 4 hours since her past feed because I know she doesn't necessarily NEED it.
  • DS nurses 6, sometimes 7 times a day (is STTN) and has solids once or twice a day.

I would have to agree with this. I think my LO is eating out of habit now. DH is traveling right now or else I would have him rock LO back to sleep at least once each early morning.

LO nurses every 2-3 hours during the day and gets a tablespoon of solids (just starting). I dream feed him at 11:30 p.m. and he has been waking up at 2:30 a.m., 4:30 a.m., 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.

  • I think that sounds normal. My DD still breastfeeds every three of four hours throughout the day, eats solids about once or twice, and gets up to eat twice at night. Last month she was waking up more at night to eat. I think it WA because she got so distracted during her day time feedings that she wasn't eating as much as she usually did. I don't have any advice to get her to sleep longer at night. I feed DD on demand.

Same here exactly but its 3 times a night here. I'm not gonna try and get her to drop night feedings till she is a year old. Though if she wants to do it on her own I'm okay with that :)
    Add me to this train.

The pedi told me at DD's 6 month appointment that every 3-4 hours with 1-3 rounds of solids a day is normal. My pedi's office seems to be a big proponent of CIO at nighttime to get away from nighttime feedings, but I don't feel comfortable doing that just yet because she's clearly in the middle of a growth spurt and a whole bunch of other developmental crap, so the likelihood is she needs the additional calories. But I could be wrong. And I'm also planning on waiting til she hits the 1 year mark to really start pushing off the nighttime feedings.
  • DD is 7 months and eats about 6 times during the day, and usually once during the night.  Sometimes she does sleep all the way through the night without the feeding, though - probably once a week.

I offer solids twice a day.

  • DD eats about 5 - 6 times a day and 1 - 2 times during the night. DH goes in to comfort if she wakes up less than 4 hours since her last feeding. She usually goes right back to sleep when he does this.  She eats more often (but not huge quantities) with her nanny - LO seems to hate that darned bottle and only drinks from it to mildly satiate her hunger. Ugh. I wish she'd take more during the day and then I could feel ok trying some more night weaning. She is almost 8 months, 19 lbs.
  • DS eats every 3 hours during the day and every 2 at night. I wish he'd at least switch those figures around, but oh well. I'm not comfortable doing anything aggressive to change it; he'll do it on his own when he's ready.

  • DD eats about every 2 1/2 hours during the day and then wakes up 1-2 times a night from 7pm-7am. She was only waking once but its been 2 which I think is because she is teething. She is eating solids 1-2 times a day and sometimes she just wants to BF.
