Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Did you wait to cut the cord?

I'm not sure where to ask this, and figured the 0-3 had babies and could tell me!! I'm seeing more and more on waiting until it stops pulsating to clamp and cut. Did you do this? Why or why not? We're you happy with the outcome? Was your hospital staff willing to allow? Thanks ladies!!!

Re: Did you wait to cut the cord?

  • This is great info! Thank you guys so much!
  • I really wanted to delay, but the cord was wrapped around his neck and my little guy was in serious distress so it was cut before he was even completely delivered. They would have been happy to do it if everything had gone smoothly. My best advice is to not get too attached to any of the plans you have. While it's nice to know what you want, the delivery room can be a seriously unpredictable place.

  • We delayed, until the cord stopped pulsing. It just gives the baby one last dose of nutrients and healthy hormones. She laid on my chest and we just snuggled until it was time to cut the cord.
  • We wanted to delay cord clamping, but I can't remember if we did or not. I don't remember my husband cutting the cord either, I was just focused on my baby.

  • It was the plan for both DDs.  DD1 seemed in distress when she was first born so my OB had to cut it fairly quickly and then the NICU team took her.  With DD2 we did delayed cord clamping once it was done pulsing since DD2 was doing great.

  • Like PP whatever you plan can really go out the window. If you want it done just let them know but if you are unable to, dont be too upset. My doctor had said that he hadn't seen or read any actual findings that it has astonishing benefits, just theories and small observations. I'm sure it does have benefits but I wasn't heartbroken that we couldn't because I had massive complications and an emergency cs.

Yup. Because it's her blood and there's no reason she shouldn't have it and lots of reasons that she should. No pushback at all from med staff.

  • We did delayed cord cutting at the hospital. They were fine with it. DH cut the cord when it turned white.

  • I was going to dlay until it turned white but had a really short cord so he could only reach my stomach. After about three minutes my maternal need to really look at him kicked in and I had it cut. The doctor was fine waiting as long as I wanted to, though.
