Cannot eat :(

I'm losing weight and I'm eating less calories. I've tried shakes with nutrients and eating a little at a time. But the days just go by so fast and I'm not eating enough. People keep saying I look thinner and are freaking out on me. I don't know what to do. Zofran only helps with nausea it doesn't help you eat. :(

Re: Cannot eat :(

  • Easier said than done but unless your doctors are concerned, try not to stress (its not good for you or babies). I lost at first too and didnt really start gaining until closer to the end of my 2nd trimester. Now Im on a steady climb and doing well. Good luck to you and I hope youre able to start feeling better soon.

  • Hi there - I agree with PP - stick with what your doctor is concerned about.  There is not always a good reason to be putting on a ton of weight and your doctor knows your situation best.

For anyone who has been advised by their doctors to put on more weight - I was in the same situation, except in my case I did need to eat more (they knew my LOs were going to be here no later than 32 weeks regardless, and I am tiny and will likely make tiny babies, and wanted me putting on weight for that reason).  I had zero appetite from about 6 weeks, and I did not have any morning sickness, except when I was trying to force feed myself.  I just had to put myself on a schedule, stick to mostly liquids (high calories smoothies and milk shakes - grapeseed oil is a good quality oil that doesn't taste strong in fruit smoothies), and honestly, be ready to throw up a certain amount of whatever I could keep down.  My husband was also amazing in that he just would make me shakes whenever - including grabbing me an ensure at 3am if I thought I could get it down.  Somehow not being faced with making the food myself made it easier.  I also did not worry too much about nutrition during this time - if ramen was what I could keep down that day (or for a solid week... or more), ramen was what the kiddos were going to get.

Around 18 weeks the lack of appetite finally broke and I had about 7 good weeks where I could eat real food again.  Now, as the doctors predicted, I'm running out of space (amazingly three kids take up a lot of real estate!), and am back to a mostly liquid diet and my old tricks.  I'm grateful for the 7 weeks though!  It was nice to hit a chicago deep dish pizza with abandon and no regrets :).
  • I agree with everyone else -- you really need to check with your doctor if you are concerned.  It took until 16ish weeks until food sounded good again and I wasn't force feeding myself.  I also lost weight at first, but am gaining at a good rate now that I am in the second trimester.  Don't freak out and talk to your doctor.
