Preemies

Preemie development

It's very hard lately to keep reminding myself not to compare my DD to other babies. She has two cousins, one is 3 weeks older and one 5 weeks older and they're were both term babies. Both of her cousins have hit developmental milestones early on, such as holding up their head, rolling over and sleeping through the night. I know that my DD will be a little delayed on these because she was 5 weeks early and is still half their weight. But it is still hard to not compare!! I am told that by 2 years she will have totally caught up, so I just keep thinking about that! Bright side she gets their too small clothes!

Re: Preemie development

  • It can be hard. There were 6 of us in my group of friends who had babies within a 2 month span. I was due 3 months after the last in the group, but instead delivered right in the middle. It was hard sometimes to see all the other babies do things that dd wasn't close to doing.

Although, in some ways it was a bit easier. My friends stressed about if their child was meeting milestones "on-time" and I knew that dd would get there when she got there. It took some of the pressure off.

I expect that your LO will catch up long before 2. Dd was born exactly at 27 weeks and is completely caught up now at 13 months. Good luck to you and your LO.

  • It's definitely hard  not to compare, even when you know to adjust their age. My nephew was born full term, two weeks after my daughter, and I had a hard time with how "advanced" he seemed. Just remember your baby will get there, too :)

  • My daughter is 15 months old.  And she is still not completely walking.  She can stand, and she can kinda walk.  But she prefers to crawl or walk on her knees.  And it is a waiting game for her to be where I see other toddlers her age are.

But luckily I have my son, and I know that he can get there.  Even with the words, his words and sentences really took off when he was 2 1/2 years old.

  • It is very hard, but remember, even FT babies are on the later end of development sometimes. It seemed like DS, a FT baby, took forever to hit his milestones. Sometimes it just happens that way. As long as your baby is developing along her own curve, she's doing just fine.
