How much does your LO drink during the day?

I'm worried that DS isn't drinking enough liquids during the day and looking for some tips on how to get him to drink more.

He only gets water and milk.  I give him milk at mealtimes (and usually leave it out for about 30 minutes afterward); the cups are 10 oz. but I probably only fill it to 8 oz.  He will often finish one full cup throughout the day, sometimes not.  If he does, I refill it, but he probably doesn't drink much more.

His water is out all day long for him to drink.  He likes it cold so I put ice in it a few times throughout the day, but he hasn't even been finishing one full cup. He likes water and I've never given him juice, so it's not like he's looking for sweetness or anything.  I encourage him to drink it, today I even drew a line on the cup to get him to drink it "down to the line" but it didn't help much.

I read online today that between the age of 1 and 3, they should drink about 1.3 litres of water a day.  That's over four 10 oz. cups and that doesn't even include milk!

Any tips to get him to drink more?  Are your LOs really drinking multiple cups per day?

ETA:  Maybe the 1.3 litres does include milk, hard to tell from what I'm reading...either way he's not getting enough.

  • Holy smokes, that seems like a lot!  DD drinks two 8oz cups of milk a day and maybe 8 oz of water a day?  Not really sure I don't keep track.  Maybe to get him to drink more you could make a smoothie for with fruit, milk and ice?

Maybe this is a dumb question, but as long as he's peeing enough, what's the concern?

  • My son loves milk and will easily drink 30 oz a day. He also drinks 8-16 oz of water a day. We live in a hot climate so that's probably why he's drinking so much.
Toddlers know when they are thirsty and hungry and will eat and drink when they need to. I wouldn't worry about it, as long as he's peeing.
  • My son is also a big milk drinker. He probably drinks about 20-25 oz of milk a day and I'm lucky if he drinks a cup of water.  He asks for milk when I offer him juice or water but I try to get him to drink water whenever possible. He rarely drinks juice.

  • DS1 is almost three and drinks milk with breakfast and dinner for a total of about 12 oz. He has a cup of water available all day and drinks around 20 oz. I have suspicions that when he's at grandma's house (she watches him 2 days a week) all he drinks is milk but when he's home he has no problem drinking water. He never had juice when he was younger so never developed a taste for it.

  • My son drinks 12oz of milk and anywhere between 4oz and 12oz of water per day. Fourty ounces sounds like a lot!

  • He drinks a glass of water with each meal (so about 24 oz. of water) and one 8oz. glass of 1% organic milk.  If we go to the pool, I bring him an extra coconut water juice.

  • DS usually drinks a cup of milk at lunch and dinner and sips on water throughout the day. We always keep cups of cold water out for him so he can drink whenever he's thirsty.
