PSA: Check baby's fingers and toes!!

We had a doctor appointment today for my LO's fussiness. They said they needed me to take her clothes off to weigh her and when I took her socks off I noticed she had a hair wrapped around her middle toe and then tangled around the next two toes. I got it off the two of the toes but just could not get it off the middle toe and she would SCREAM when I messed with it. When the doctor came in I showed her and she couldn't get it off either. She told us to go get Nair hair removal as soon as we left (you could tell she was worried) and try to get it off with that and if that didn't work to take her straight to the ER. Well we used the nair but couldn't tell if the hair was gone because you couldn't really see it so we took her to the ER just to be safe. They ended up not seeing anything on her toe so they said just to keep an eye on it to see if it got worse. She doesn't scream when I mess with it now so I think it's gone but it was definitely scary looking! The doctor said she didn't think it had been there very long either. (And I agree because I just gave her a bath the night before last). I just want to let you all know so that it doesn't happen to any of your LO's because if it goes unnoticed for too long they can lose their finger or toe!

Re: PSA: Check baby's fingers and toes!!

  • This actually happens often and when babies are extra fussy and you don't know why it's recommended to check for hairs on fingers and toes. So weird it happens to babies more than adults!

  • This was the one piece of info that my MIL actually helped by sharing. She is constantly checking both my boys' fingers and toes after she holds them to check for hair. Glad that your LO is ok!

  • It's called a "Hair tourniquet". Made me paranoid with my first, but now I'm just in the habit of checking DD's hands and toes all the time. I have long, luscious locks so, ya know.
  • I found one on one of my son's fingers a few weeks ago. He wasn't fussing or anything; I just was looking at his hands and noticed it. I couldn't get it off with just my hands, so I grabbed the tweezers and was able to get them between the piece of hair and his finger. This loosened it up enough to be able to get it off.
  • Never heard of this! Scary!

I do too. Especially with the rate my hair falls out post partum. It's already started and it majorly sucks.

  • Our nurse during our parenting class mentioned that this happened to her LO so whenever E is crying inconsolably I always check her fingers and toes if checking to see if she is hungry, wet, tired or wants to be held.

I have really light blonde hair and I'm paranoid about not being able to see my hair caught on her.
