Solids and night weaning

So my boys are 6 months and we have been doing a small amount of solids once a day. They're starting to eat larger bottles and further apart but they're still waking once a night for a bottle. They're not starving at night so I think it's out of habit now. Has anyone done any night weaning? Any success or tips? They're taking 32 oz of formula during the day as it is and as we introduce more solids I really don't think they need this motn bottle. I just need opinions! Also, when did you start feeding more than one meal a day? Our schedule is so crazy now that they're on solids and I can't quite figure out how to fit it all in!

Re: Solids and night weaning

  • Mine still nurse once at night, so I have no advice on night weaning.  I would like to drop it, but I like knowing they're getting extra calories that they don't get during the day.

We started doing 2 meals around 7 months and then 3 meals by 9.5-10 months. We did, and still do, meals when they wake up and milk before they go down for a nap/bedtime.

  • Like PP said, I slowly decreased the amount they were getting in their MOTN bottles. They were getting up 2x to eat as of last month. I ended up decreasing the amount to about 3 and a half ounces (during the day they eat 5 1/2-6 ounces). They dropped the 1am feeding last month, went through a growth spurt and took it back, then dropped it again.

For the past week they dropped the second feeding (4am ish) and have been sttn for about a week (6:30 pm - 6:30 am). My DS woke up a few times at 5:30ish but we gave him the paci and he slept for another hour. The past 2 nights he hasn't woken up until 6:30.  I never ever thought this day would come but I'm so happy! Good luck to you!

  • I agree with PP to start decreasing the amount. We just did this, and now my boys are sleeping 10 hours then only drinking 1-2 oz at night and back down for 2 hours. Soon we will cut it out completely.

As for solids, I just kind of dove right in. I went from 1 meal to 3 meals in a week. They were taking 5 bottles/day when we started (every 3 hours). I did 1st bottle+solids, 3rd bottle +solids and solids 1-1.5 hrs before their last bottle. Now they are eating every 4 hours, so it's 1st bottle + solids, solids between 2nd and 3rd bottle and 1 hour before last bottle.

    Having a schedule really helps.
