Infant car seat

Ok. So, I had no idea you can't/shouldn't use infant car seats older than 5 years. DS is 3 years and change and I saved his to use with #2 but I'm not pregnant so that seat will probably be older than 5 years by the time I have #2.

I'd like to give it to my brother/SIL who are expecting on my son's 4th birthday. Will that be ok? Or does the 5-year count down start sooner than when the package is opened?

So confused!

Re: Infant car seat

  • The seat will be marked with an expiration date. That is the date you go by. If you can't find the expiration date, call the manufacturer and ask them. They will need the model number, manufacture date, and/or the serial number from the seat.

The expiration date is determined from the date of manufacture, not the date you start using it.

  • The only infant seat that has a 5 year expiration is the Peg Perego Primmo Vaggio (unless you're in Canada and have one made after 01-2011, then it's 7 years). Most are 6. There should be a white sticker on the seat that says manufactured on xxxxxx, and either a do not use past xxxx date stamped in the plastic (NOT there for Britax seats), or will say in your manual. You can look online as well.
  • It'll look something like this - this seat was manufactured Oct 27 2005, and at the time Graco seats expired  Dec 31 of the 6th year. Your manual will cover this info.
