Hi. Waiting to meet with my doctor re: cholesterol next week. Was super high. Not sure if age (43) or genetics or both. I'll let you know.
Mine was not that high 237. I sort of think it is ridic to put a 42 year old on cholesterol meds at that level. I tried modifying the diet, adding oatmeal, nuts and fish oil. It didn't do a damn thing. The month I was on lipitor it went down to 153 but did basically nothing for my Triglyceride level.
I feel 110 percent better after stoppping the lipitor. I guess I am more sensitve to my seretonin being messed up than the typical person. According to dr google, statins change how your brain uses/transmits serotonin. Your brain uses cholesterol and levels below 150 can cause psychosis in some people.(again according to dr google so take that for what it is worth
My blood work came back at almost pre-diabetic this time, so we are trying metformin to see if it also helps with the triglyceride level. Good luck at the dr!
I'm anxious about the entire thing. My total cholesterol was 239 but the good cholesterol was good and the triglycerides were acceptable. So I'm going to push my primary care doctor to allow me to try diet--and lord help me, exercise--for a few months and then revisit meds.
At the time of my physical I was 148 lb (I am 5'3.5") so a bit overweight if going by BMI alone (around 25.3 I think). I'm 43. I've been under extreme stress the last year plus with my mom basically becoming an invalid after nearly dying from complications from Parkinson's Disease and financial stress. So we'll see what my doctor says.
I'm quite reluctant to take meds despite a family history of high cholesterol.
Hoping the new meds work for you, Assembly. Love the new pic of Nathaniel. I hope he's doing well. It's been a while since I've seen updates on the SN board. I figure that despite lingering gross motor delays and some mild sensory stuff, A is typical and I probably don't 'belong' there anymore. Though I do check in.
I also have a family history of high cholesterol. My mom's was in the 300's but she is still ticking along at 88 without any significant issues. My dad's was high and he passed away at 67 from heart disease, but he was also an alcoholic and did not care for himself at all.
I need to lose weight. Big Time. I think this is the route I need to go to get the triglyceride number down.
aww thanks! Nate is doing well. He is in an ADD phase right now and I am trying to figure out if it is actually ADD or just toddler ADD since he is so delayed in development. I CANNOT let go of that kid's hand. It is ridiculous and I am sure people think I am a huge helicopter. He would walk right out into the street if I didn't have a grip. Asking him to "stay right here by mommy" will not work. AT ALL. Glad your DS is doing well! Good luck with the diet and exercise!
Re: Anyone taking a Statin for high cholesterol?
I've never taken Lipitor. I'm a pharmacist, I've talked to numerous patients about Lipitor, and I've never had one report changes in mood.
I had my doc threaten it, but he wanted to try having me lower it "naturally" by taking fish oil first...
The only thing I've really heard/discussed was that you're more prone to have muscle issues/cramping...
