rolling onto stomach while sleeping

From day one my baby has liked to sleep on his side or stomach. I know this is a huge no no. We always put him on his back but when we go in there he has rolled himself onto his stomach and is sleeping.  The past couple of weeks its all the time now. If you put him back on his back or side he rolls onto his stomach. Does anyone elses LO do this? We have the angel care monitor to detect his breathing but it still scares me  that something will happen to him. The past week I havent fussed and just let him be on his tummy.  Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this?

Re: rolling onto stomach while sleeping

  • My DD1 did this also, she is fine:) I'm not sure there is anything you can do to stop it. Just make sure there is nothing in the crib.

  • I thought the belief was once they can "pick" their sleeping position they're probably okay. Because they're strong enough to move if there's a problem.

This is what I thought, too. Don't put him down on his stomach, but if he ends up there himself, it's probably okay.
ETA - but I could be wrong. I'm not sure if this is true - LO sleeps on his back :)

  • Ok thanks makes me feel a little better. yeah Im not sure what you can do if the like to sleep this way..he always has his head facing to the side too. I dont have anything in the crib either. Ive heard some people say prop them on their side with a blanket but that scares me even more to put a blanket in there.
  • Flame away, but DD takes her naps on her belly. I check her frequently. Our pedi is fine with this because of her belly issues. At night, I allow her to fall asleep this way and then roll her onto her back.

  • If baby can roll into it, baby can roll out if need be.
