Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Dangerous sleeper

So my son(14.5 weeks) just learned how to roll over from back to front. Once there he is stuck, he hasn't figured out how to roll back(front to back), not to mention he HATES being on his tummy. So of course no more swaddling as of last night. But now he is up every 2/3 hours cause he rolls over and can't get back. After about the 5th or 6th time of getting up to roll him over and console him, he had his whole leg stuck in between the bars of the crib while on his tummy. I have the breathable bumpers on the crib, I can't figure out how he managed that. After that, I strapped him in his swing to sleep the rest of the night.

How can I either keep him from rolling at night or help him learn really really fast how to roll front to back?

Re: Dangerous sleeper

  • Ours just learned to roll too but we watched her carefully and at least right now needs her arms in order to roll. So we are half swaddling her right now. (One arm in, one arm out) and plan to get the other arm out in a week or so.

I think as her tummy muscles get stronger she will be able to roll without but right now she flings an arm to get over and when just using her legs she kinda rocks back and forth.

  • He must use his legs and tummy then cause his arms always get stuck underneath him. So when he is swaddle he will still roll.

This is a normal phase they go through. Means less sleep for a while but there's nothing you can do to stop them from rolling. He needs to just figure out how to get back on his back.

This. My son is 5 months and went through the same thing about a month ago. It made for a few long nights of repositioning him frequently, but he just figured out that he can sleep on his side and eventually if he ends up on his tummy he doesn't wake up anymore. Hang in there
