Going to night shift to day shift

I currently work 3 12 hour shifts a week on nights. There is a position on day shift available. I really want to apply for it. It would make my life more normal, I would get waaaay better sleep, and have more time off.
The only downside is I would lose my shift differential. But there is always extra shifts to pick up that we also get bonuses for doing as we'll. Also I am going to go back to school next year and get my masters that also requires clinical hours too. So it would be so much easier if I worked a day shift job.

What would you do?

  • If you can afford the pay cut, I would switch. You can still pick up extra shifts if needed. It sounds like you have a lot on your plate, I would work whatever shift makes things the easiest.

  • I've been working nights for years while my husband and I both finished up school. He graduates on Saturday, and I am slated to go to day shift in September. I love my night shift family, but now that we won't need the differential as badly anymore, I'm really looking forward to having a more normal schedule!! Also, we are always hurting for night shift staff, so if I hate days, I can easily switch back.

  • I just went thru the same thing. I chose day shift so I could spend more quality time with friends and family and I'm able to pick up any extra open shifts I want. I think it's worth it.
